Product Description

Cuibhrichte, meaning bound in Scottish Gaelic, is a stocking stitch mitt with a drop stitch braid which circles the mitt from wrist to index finger, binding you with a soft chain. With a simple elegance these mitts are a quick and easy knit and with six sizes they’ll fit everyone from teen to adult.

The pattern is fully written instructions and also includes a photo tutorial for a super stretchy cast on called the Estonian cast-on for the bottom of the glove, and the backward loop cast-on, the Drop Stitch Braid and Chain Stitch used to join the two chains at the wrist. The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern, and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos. These additional techniques are used: cables and picking up stitches.

Cuibhrichte Stocking Stitch Mitts with Drop Stitch Braid

What is Being Made

Cuibhrichte, meaning "bound" in Scottish Gaelic, is a pair of elegant stocking stitch mitts featuring a decorative drop stitch braid that circles from the wrist to the index finger. These fingerless mitts are designed as a quick and accessible knitting project suitable for knitters of intermediate skill level. Available in six sizes ranging from teen to adult (XS through XL), with finished hand circumferences from 15 cm to 21.5 cm (6 to 8.5 inches), these mitts offer a versatile fit for a wide range of wearers.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Primary Stitch: The main fabric is worked in stocking stitch, a fundamental knitting pattern that creates a smooth, classic appearance when worked in the round on circular needles or double-pointed needles.

Featured Technique: A drop stitch braid serves as the signature design element, creating a soft chain that wraps around the mitt from wrist to index finger. This decorative braid adds visual interest and textural contrast while maintaining the simple elegance of the overall design.

Construction Method: The mitts are knitted in the round using either circular needles or double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction and even stitch tension throughout the project.

Materials and Gauge

Yarn: Eden Cottage Yarns Hayton 4ply in the colorway Red Kite is specified for this project. This premium yarn blend contains 80% Merino wool, 10% nylon, and 10% cashmere, providing softness, durability, and a luxurious feel. The yarn is rated at 380 yards per 100 grams.

Yardage Requirements by Size:

  • XS: 142 meters (155 yards)
  • S: 160 meters (176 yards)
  • M1: 172 meters (188 yards)
  • M2: 202 meters (220 yards)
  • L: 220 meters (240 yards)
  • XL: 247 meters (270 yards)

Gauge: 32 stitches and 44 rows measured over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stocking stitch when worked in the round.

Needles and Tools: The pattern requires 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles measuring 80 centimeters (32 inches) or longer, or alternatively, double-pointed needles of the same size. Additional supplies include five stitch markers per mitt, one removable stitch marker per mitt, and a 3.5 mm crochet hook for finishing details. A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends.

Fit and Ease

These mitts are designed to be worn with up to 0 to 1.25 centimeters (0 to 0.5 inches) of negative ease, meaning they should fit snugly against the hand for a secure, comfortable wear.

Skill Level and Project Characteristics

Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, Cuibhrichte is described as a quick and easy knit despite its decorative elements. The straightforward stocking stitch base combined with the drop stitch braid technique makes this an accessible project for knitters with some foundational experience, while the multiple size options ensure the pattern's versatility across different hand sizes and age groups.
