Product Description

What’s this: This is my Cubic shawl, worked in Tunisian crochet and created in collaboration with Artfil.
Why should I make this: It may look involved, but Cubic is very straightforward. There is no seaming: each shape flows from the previous one.
When will this get the most use: Throughout the year, as a shawl or as an oversized scarf.
Who is it for: This is for all lovers of yarn and colour.
Where do I start: This pattern is rated Intermediate - you’ll need to know or be eager to learn Tunisian crochet stitches. You will need 500g of DK weight yarn (I used Chalet Yarn by Artfil) and a 4.5 mm interchangeable Tunisian crochet hook with cables. Other notions: a yarn needle and some stitch markers.
Feedback is always welcome and I hope to see your projects!

Cubic Tunisian Crochet Shawl by ACCROchet
Project Overview
The Cubic Tunisian Crochet Shawl is an intermediate-level downloadable crochet pattern designed by ACCROchet. This shawl showcases the distinctive techniques of Tunisian crochet, a hybrid method that combines elements of traditional crochet and knitting to create dense, fabric-like textiles with unique dimensional qualities.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 60 inches by 29 inches (152.5 cm by 74 cm), making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering or draping. The shawl features a cubic construction, which refers to the geometric stitch pattern that creates three-dimensional visual effects characteristic of advanced Tunisian crochet work.
Tunisian Crochet Technique
Tunisian crochet is a specialized technique that differs from standard crochet methods. The process involves two distinct phases for each row: a forward pass and a return pass. During the forward pass, the crocheter inserts the hook into specified stitches and pulls up loops, keeping all loops active on the hook—similar to knitting. The return pass then works off these accumulated loops, creating a cohesive fabric. This technique produces a tighter, more structured fabric than traditional crochet while maintaining the versatility of hook-based construction.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern utilizes foundational Tunisian stitches including:
- Chain (Ch) – Used as specified in the pattern instructions to establish foundation rows and create structural elements
- Foundation Row – Worked as a forward pass by inserting the hook into the back bump of chain stitches, yarn over, and pulling up loops
- Forward Pass (FP) – The first phase of Tunisian rows where loops are accumulated on the hook by inserting into subsequent stitches
- Decrease (Dec) – Used to shape the shawl and create the cubic geometric effects
The cubic pattern emerges through strategic decreases and stitch placement that creates dimensional, block-like visual elements across the fabric surface.
Materials and Tools
The shawl is worked in DK weight yarn using Artfil Chalet, a blend of 50% hemp and 50% merino wool. This fiber combination provides breathability from the hemp content while adding warmth and elasticity from the merino, making it ideal for a versatile wrap garment.
Yarn quantities by color:
- Color A, Hamac – 200 g
- Color B, Citronelle – 100 g
- Color C, Détente – 100 g
- Color D, Pédalo – 50 g
- Color E, Sérénité – 50 g
Tools required:
- 4.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook with cables up to 30 inches (75 cm) – the cable length accommodates the large number of stitches required for Tunisian work
- 4.5 mm regular crochet hook – used for finishing techniques and edge work
- Yarn needle – for weaving in ends and seaming if necessary
- Stitch markers – essential for tracking pattern repeats and shaping decreases
Gauge and Blocking
The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 Tunisian knit stitches and 16 rows equals 4 inches (10 cm) after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is critical for Tunisian crochet projects, as the fabric's density directly affects the final dimensions and drape of the shawl. Crocheters should work a gauge swatch in pattern, measure it against the specified dimensions, and adjust hook size accordingly before beginning the full project. Blocking is essential for Tunisian crochet, as it helps even out stitches and set the fabric's final shape and dimensions.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, this shawl is suitable for crocheters with experience in basic crochet techniques who are ready to advance into Tunisian methods. The pattern requires understanding of forward and return passes, decreasing techniques, and the ability to manage multiple stitches on a cable hook simultaneously.
