Product Description
This crochet tutorial was created and first published in Happily Hooked Magazine Issue 51 (Juin 2018). This 3D flower was inspired by The Beauty and The Beast's rose. I used mercerized cotton and metal wire to crochet it but you can use threads and yarns of your choice. It keeps its form perfectly and you can create smaller or bigger roses, if you want.
Crochet Red Rose by Naturofils
What is Being Made
This project creates a decorative crochet red rose, designed as an intermediate-level craft suitable for display or embellishment purposes. The rose is constructed using specialized techniques to achieve a realistic, dimensional flower form that holds its shape through the integration of structural elements.
Techniques Used
The primary technique central to this design is crocheting over wire, which allows the petals and structure to maintain their intended shape and form. This method involves holding a length of metal wire while crocheting, then dropping the wire between rows while keeping it active within the stitches. The wire provides internal support that enables the rose to display naturally without drooping or losing its sculptural quality.
Additional techniques include creating chain spaces of varying lengths to form petal shapes, with progressively larger chain loops (ranging from 8 to 16 chains) that increase in size to build the layered, organic appearance of a blooming rose. Slip stitches are used to anchor these chain spaces at strategic intervals, creating the characteristic petal formations.
Stitches Used
- Single crochet (sc) – used as the foundation base and for filling chain spaces with dense stitch coverage
- Chain stitch (ch) – creates the petal loops in graduated sizes
- Slip stitch (sl st) – anchors chain spaces and connects structural elements
Materials
Yarn: DMC Petra Crochet 0 Cotton 5, a weight #0 thread composed of 100% cotton. Each skein provides 437 yards (400 meters) per 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The project requires three skeins: Red (A) for the petals, Green (B) for leaves or stem details, and Yellow (C) for the center.
Hook and Notions: A 2.0mm crochet hook paired with 0.4mm spool of metal wire for structural support. A yarn needle is needed for finishing and weaving in ends.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and comfort working with specialized techniques such as crocheting over wire. Gauge is noted as not critical to the project, allowing for some flexibility in tension and sizing.
