Product Description
This one ball wonder is simple, quick and easy to make.
The Crochet Lanyard Pattern is confident beginner friendly; however, you will need to have a basic understanding of crochet stitches and terminology.
This 3-page crochet pattern contains a detailed description of how to create the Lanyard; with a list of necessary materials, step-by-step instructions and photos to help along the way.
I’ve had an idea floating around my head to crochet a lanyard to not only hold my keys (I hate heavy pockets or for when I don’t have a pocket handy) and to display my ever-growing enamel badge collection!
I finally got hold of some swivel hooks (the rainbow ones are simply stunning) and used my favourite coloured Yarn and Colours Must Have cotton (Petroleum) to make a useful and creative lanyard for keys and badges!
Crochet Lanyard by BlueBuggs
What is Being Made
This project creates a functional crochet lanyard, a versatile accessory perfect for holding keys, ID badges, or other small items. The finished lanyard measures approximately 47cm in length with a width of 2cm, making it an ideal size for everyday use. Designed as a quick and simple project, this lanyard is described as a "one ball wonder," meaning it requires only a single ball of yarn to complete. The finished piece features decorative picot details that add visual interest to this practical accessory.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The lanyard is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern employs alternate rows worked in a consistent direction, following instructions from left to right and top to bottom. The construction begins with either a chain (ch) or foundation single crochet (Fsc) base, which provides a sturdy foundation for the piece. The use of foundation single crochet is particularly useful as it creates both the base chain and the first row of stitches simultaneously, reducing the need for a separate turning chain and making the base more stable.
A small swivel hook is incorporated into the design, likely attached at one end to allow the lanyard to be easily clipped to bags, belts, or other items. The pattern is worked with firm tension to ensure the lanyard maintains its shape and durability during regular use.
Stitches Used
This beginner-friendly pattern utilizes basic crochet stitches:
- Single Crochet (sc) - the foundation stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric
- Double Crochet (dc) - a taller stitch that adds variety to the texture
- Chain (ch) - used for foundation and decorative elements
- Slip Stitch (sl st) - used to join rounds and create the picot details
- Foundation Single Crochet (Fsc) - an alternative starting method that combines the base chain and first row
- Picot - a decorative element created using the sequence (ch3, sl st into 1st ch base), which forms small loops along the edges
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The lanyard requires minimal materials, making it an economical project. The pattern calls for 25g of cotton yarn in a sport weight (4-ply), which is more than sufficient to complete one lanyard. The designer recommends specific yarn options: Yarn & Colours Petroleum 70 or Scheepjes Catona Denim Cream 102, both of which are high-quality cotton yarns suitable for creating crisp, defined stitches.
A 2.5mm crochet hook is used to work the yarn, which is appropriate for sport weight cotton and creates the firm tension required for this project. The gauge is measured at 14 stitches over 5cm with firm tension, ensuring that the finished lanyard will be appropriately sized and durable. Additional materials include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and a small swivel hook for the functional attachment point.
Difficulty Level and Project Suitability
This pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or looking for a quick, satisfying project. The simple stitch combinations and straightforward construction method mean that even novice crocheters can successfully complete this lanyard. The project's quick completion time and minimal material requirements make it ideal as a teacher's gift or personal accessory, and the pattern's simplicity allows crafters to focus on developing fundamental crochet skills.
