Cow Plush Crochet Pattern by BNMByo
What Is Being Made
This is a crochet cow plush toy designed as an amigurumi project. The finished cow measures 8.30 inches (21 centimeters) in height when sitting, making it a compact, huggable stuffed animal suitable for children or as a decorative handmade gift. The pattern creates a three-dimensional cow figure with distinct body parts that are crocheted separately and then sewn together.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary crafting method. The pattern is specifically designed for amigurumi, which is the Japanese technique of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and figures. Amigurumi construction involves creating individual pieces in the round and assembling them to form a complete character. The pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, though it assumes crafters already understand fundamental amigurumi skills.
Required Crochet Skills and Stitches
This cow plush pattern requires knowledge of essential amigurumi techniques:
- Magic ring – the foundation technique for starting amigurumi pieces in a tight, seamless center
- Single crochet (SC) – the primary stitch used throughout the pattern for building the plush's structure
- Increases (Inc) – adding extra stitches in a single stitch to expand the piece and create shaping
- Decreases (Dec) – reducing stitches to shape and close sections of the toy
- Color changes – simple techniques for switching yarn colors within the same round or between rounds to create the cow's distinctive markings
- Sewing and attaching pieces – assembling the crocheted components (body, head, legs, horns, ears) into the finished plush using a tapestry needle
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for two yarn colors to create the cow's coloring and markings. The designer used Himalaya Dolphin Baby, which is a 100% micro-polyester (microfiber) yarn. The yardage requirements are approximately 100 grams / 120 meters of the primary color and 40-50 grams of a secondary color, plus a small amount of brown yarn for the horns. The pattern accommodates aran, chunky, and super chunky yarn weights, providing flexibility in material selection.
Alternative yarn options recommended by the designer include YarnArt Dolce, Bernat Blanket Yarn, Bernat Baby Blanket, and Bernat Blanket Brights. These recommendations suggest the pattern works well with soft, plush, and bulky-weight yarns that create a cuddly finished texture.
Tools and Notions
The following supplies are needed to complete this project:
- Crochet hook size US G 7 / 4.5mm – the hook size specified for use with the recommended yarns
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing – for filling the crocheted pieces to create a soft, three-dimensional plush toy
- Safety eyes (10mm) – two eyes for the cow's face, sized appropriately for a small plush
- Tapestry needle – for sewing pieces together and weaving in yarn ends
- Stitch marker – for tracking the beginning of rounds during crochet construction
