Product Description

This is a method to cover any size of straight-sided jar or pot with a lid that screws on or similar (I have some with a sort of ‘bung’ lid). You work the base first, to fit the size, then go up the side, then decrease to keep it in place (IF the jar/pot has a ‘shoulder’), and do the same the other way up to make the cover for the lid. It’s really easy, and the results make good storage pots and nice little gifts, especially if you have small items to go inside such as jewellery or beauty products, or small toys such as marbles or game pieces – even cookies. Most yarns, including the cottons I like to use for this, will stretch enough that the covers can be put on and taken off as often as you like if they or the jars need washing! I also suggest how to work out how much yarn you’ll need, but you do have to do at least part of the work for size, first. There's a simple version for a mustard jar at the end, to make it really clear what to do.

Cover any Size Jar or Pot by Elise Mann

What is Being Made

This crochet pattern provides instructions for creating custom-fitted covers for straight-sided jars or pots with screw-on lids or similar closure systems. The design is versatile and adaptable to virtually any container size, making it ideal for storage solutions and handmade gifts. These covers work particularly well for storing small items such as jewelry, beauty products, small toys like marbles or game pieces, or even cookies. The finished covers are functional yet decorative, combining practicality with aesthetic appeal.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs amigurumi-style crochet worked in continuous spirals, a technique that creates seamless, three-dimensional pieces without joining rounds. The crocheter marks the row start or end as preferred to track progress through the spiral construction. The pattern uses a strategic building method: the base is worked first to match the jar or pot's diameter, then the sides are built upward. Decreases are incorporated to accommodate any shoulder or taper in the container's shape, ensuring the cover fits snugly. The same decreasing technique is then reversed to create the lid cover section, which mirrors the base structure.

Stitches Used

While the pattern overview emphasizes amigurumi-style spiral construction, specific stitch abbreviations and detailed stitch instructions are contained within the downloadable PDF. The spiral technique typically employs single crochet or similar basic stitches worked continuously without breaks between rounds, creating a smooth, integrated fabric.

Materials

This pattern accommodates DK and Aran weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. Cotton yarns are specifically recommended by the designer for their durability and washability—the natural stretch of most yarns, including cottons, allows the finished covers to be removed and replaced repeatedly without damage, making them practical for cleaning both the cover and the jar or pot. The pattern includes guidance on calculating yarn yardage requirements, though partial completion of the project is necessary to determine the exact amount needed for your specific container size. Standard crochet hooks appropriate to your chosen yarn weight are required.

Difficulty Level

Rated as beginner-friendly, this pattern is accessible to newer crocheters while remaining engaging for experienced makers. The straightforward spiral construction and simple shaping make it an excellent project for building foundational skills in amigurumi techniques and custom sizing.
