Countervail Crochet Cowl by OneLoopShy Designs
What Is Being Made
Countervail is an intermediate-level crochet cowl designed to be worn as a versatile neck accessory. The finished cowl measures 9.5 inches wide by 50 inches in circumference, making it suitable for multiple styling and wrapping options. The design includes an added tie accessory that enhances its versatility and allows for creative ways to wear and secure the cowl.
Design Philosophy and Lace Construction
The Countervail cowl showcases a carefully balanced design that combines simple lace fabric with heavy edging. This contrast creates visual interest and structural integrity. The designer employs what they call the Simple Lace Formula, which relies on the interplay of seed stitch, open spaces, natural fiber yarn, an appropriately upsized hook, and blocking to achieve authentic lace fabric.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
The primary stitch pattern for Countervail is a seed stitch composed of half double crochet and slip stitch worked alternately. A key technical detail is that all stitches are worked into the back loop only, which creates a distinctive texture and appearance. The slip stitches are "tugged up" by the half double crochet stitches on either side, creating deliberate open spaces that form the lace pattern without requiring traditional chain spaces.
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc3tog – double crochet three together
The contrast edging uses a size 7 (4.5 mm) hook, which is larger than the main hook size, contributing to the "heavy edging" aesthetic that balances the light lace body.
Yarn and Materials
Countervail is worked with two different yarn weights from natural fiber sources:
- Main Color (MC): 385 yards of fingering weight yarn in Anzula Squishy
- Contrast Color (CC): 175 yards of DK weight yarn in Anzula Cricket
The use of natural fiber yarn is integral to the lace formula, as these materials respond well to blocking and create the desired drape and openness in the finished fabric.
Hooks and Gauge
The pattern calls for a size G (4 mm) hook for the main cowl body, with gauge measured at 16 stitches by 16 rows over 4 inches in pattern, before blocking. A larger size 7 (4.5 mm) hook is used specifically for the contrast edging. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the cowl to reach its intended finished dimensions and for the lace pattern to open appropriately after blocking.
Finishing and Blocking
Blocking is a crucial final step in creating the lace effect in Countervail. The blocking process allows the open spaces created by the seed stitch technique to fully develop and the natural fiber yarn to relax into its intended drape and appearance. This transformation from pre-blocked to finished fabric is a defining characteristic of the Simple Lace Formula employed in this design.
