Product Description
Choose your look with the reversible Color Infusion cowl. With a subtle two color side, or a punchier three color side you can match your mood, coat or sweater, all while keeping warm and cozy. Worked with only one chart at a time, this stranded knitting pattern gives you two different looks with ease.
Color Infusion is shown in The Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering, colors Two Drifters (A), Soave (B) and High Cotton (C).
To help with substitutions, the cowls uses approximately 270 meters of Two Drifters (color A), 250 meters of Soave (Color B), and 220 meters of High Cotton (Color C).
Please keep in mind that while gauge is not crucial for this project, any differences in gauge will affect yardage required to complete the project.
Color Infusion Reversible Cowl by Meridith Shepherd
What Is Being Made
The Color Infusion is a reversible knitted cowl designed by Meridith Shepherd for Stacked Woolens. This cowl features two distinct colorwork sides that can be worn based on preference or mood. One side showcases a subtle two-color design, while the reverse side displays a bolder three-color colorwork pattern. The finished cowl measures 31 inches (78.5 cm) in circumference and stands 7.25 inches (18.5 cm) tall, making it a versatile neckwear piece suitable for layering over coats and sweaters.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs stranded colorwork knitting, a technique that requires working with multiple yarn colors simultaneously to create patterned designs. The reversible construction involves knitting from charted patterns on both sides of the cowl, with turning rows worked between each side to create the reversible effect. The pattern requires familiarity with reading knitting charts and managing multiple colors while maintaining consistent tension and gauge throughout the project.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Color Infusion cowl is worked primarily in stranded stockinette stitch, the foundation stitch for this colorwork design. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, flat fabric that showcases the intricate colorwork patterns effectively. The design incorporates charted colorwork patterns—Chart 1 for the first side and an additional chart for the second side—allowing knitters to follow visual representations of the color placement and pattern repeats. The stranded technique involves carrying unused yarn colors across the back of the work while actively knitting with the working color.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project uses The Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering yarn in three distinct colors: Two Drifters, Soave, and High Cotton. Fingering weight yarn (also known as 3-ply or 4-ply) is a lightweight, fine yarn ideal for detailed colorwork. The pattern requires approximately 300 yards (275 meters) of each color, totaling roughly 900 yards of yarn. One skein of each color in The Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering line provides sufficient yardage to complete the cowl.
Tools and Equipment
- Size 3 (3.25 mm) circular needle, 24 inches (60 cm) in length
- Stitch markers (optional but helpful for tracking pattern repeats)
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and securing yarn tails
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 30 stitches and 39 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) worked in stranded stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the finished circumference of 31 inches and height of 7.25 inches. Knitters should swatch before beginning the project and adjust needle size if necessary to match the specified gauge.
Skill Level and Experience Requirements
The Color Infusion is rated as an intermediate difficulty project, suitable for experienced knitters with prior experience in stranded colorwork knitting. Successful completion requires familiarity with managing multiple yarn colors, reading knitting charts accurately, and maintaining even tension across color changes. Knitters new to stranded colorwork may find this project challenging and should consider practicing the technique on smaller swatches before committing to the full cowl.
