Product Description
Cohesion is the word used to describe how water molecules tend to stay close to each other. The cute little lace pattern in these socks reminded me of the shape of water molecules, all snuggled together.
These shortie socks are knit cuff down, with a German short row heel, and a rounded toe. The lace pattern is simple and fun, and centered on the instep.
This pattern is written for magic loop, but is easy to change if you prefer a different method.

Cohesion Socks by Jordan Prouty
What is Being Made
Cohesion is a pair of shortie socks designed by Jordan Prouty and inspired by the molecular structure of water. The pattern features a delicate lace design centered on the instep that resembles water molecules clustered together. These socks are worked from the cuff down and come in three sizes with finished circumferences of 7", 8", and 9".
Knitting Techniques
This sock pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to create a polished finished garment:
- Cuff-down construction: The socks are knit starting from the cuff and working downward toward the foot
- German short row heel: A shaping technique used to create the heel cup, offering a comfortable and well-fitted heel
- Rounded toe: The toe is shaped with decreases to create a smooth, rounded finish rather than a pointed or squared-off end
- Magic loop method: The pattern is written for the magic loop technique, a method for knitting small circumference items on a single long circular needle, though the instructions note this can be adapted to other preferred methods
- Lace pattern: A simple and fun lace motif is featured as the central design element on the instep
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with lace techniques. Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, with a gauge of 32 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches. The lace pattern is described as simple and fun, making it accessible for intermediate knitters. The pattern abbreviations include standard knitting notation, such as CO for cast on and ds for double stitch (a slip stitch worked purlwise with yarn in front).
