Product Description
I wanted to make some fingerless mitts from Rowan Cocoon which is a fabulous yarn. As I couldn't find a pattern I liked, I decided to design my own. These are very warm and cosy.
Cocooned Mitts by Agrarian Artisan
What is Being Made
Cocooned Mitts are a pair of warm, cosy hand coverings designed as an intermediate-level knitting project. These mitts are knitted in the round as one continuous piece from the wrist to the fingers, creating a seamless construction. The pattern provides instructions for both the left and right mitt, allowing crafters to complete a matching pair.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and decorative knitting techniques to create both structure and visual interest:
- Knitting in the round: The mitts are constructed using circular knitting, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, tubular fabric from wrist to fingertips.
- Ribbed cuff: The pattern begins with a knit 2, purl 2 (K2 P2) ribbed section that provides elasticity and a fitted wrist opening.
- Lace panel: A decorative lace design adorns the back of the hand, created using yarn overs and decreases to form an openwork pattern that contrasts with the solid stocking stitch surrounding it.
- Stocking stitch: The main body of the mitt uses stocking stitch (knit on right-side rounds, purl on wrong-side rounds when working flat, or simply knit when working in the round) to create a smooth, classic fabric.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Cocooned Mitts pattern uses a combination of basic and intermediate stitches:
- Knit (K): The fundamental knit stitch forms the majority of the fabric.
- Purl (P): Purl stitches create the ribbed cuff and frame the lace panel.
- Yarn over (YRN): This stitch creates the openings in the lace pattern by increasing without adding bulk.
- Knit 3 together (K3tog): A centered decrease that pairs with yarn overs to form the lace motif. The pattern repeats an 8-row sequence (Rounds 10 through 17) that establishes the lace panel design.
The lace pattern as written covers the wrist area, though the designer suggests working additional pattern repeats for extended length if desired, allowing customization based on individual preference.
Materials
Cocooned Mitts are designed to be knitted with chunky-weight yarn, which creates a dense, insulating fabric ideal for warmth and cosiness. The pattern calls for needles appropriate for working in the round with bulky yarn, such as circular needles or double-pointed needles in a size suitable for the chosen yarn weight. The use of chunky yarn significantly reduces knitting time while producing a substantial, durable finished garment.
Pattern Notes
This is a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Agrarian Artisan. The pattern recommends reading through all instructions before beginning to knit, ensuring familiarity with the stitch abbreviations and construction method. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic techniques including working in the round, reading pattern instructions, and executing lace stitches before beginning this project.
