Clara Poncho Knitting Pattern by Debbie Bliss – Chunky Knit Cape in Debbie Bliss Merion

The Clara Poncho is a beautifully simple, beginner-friendly knitting pattern designed by Debbie Bliss and worked in the luxuriously chunky Debbie Bliss Merion yarn. This cosy, relaxed-fit poncho is an ideal project for knitters who are new to garment making, offering a satisfying and stylish result without complex shaping or advanced techniques. The finished piece measures 85cm/33½in wide by 65cm/25½in long, making it a generously sized, wrap-around style that drapes elegantly over the shoulders.

What Is Being Made

The Clara is a women's poncho — a versatile, pull-over outerwear piece that sits over the shoulders and arms, providing warmth and style in equal measure. The design is constructed from two identical rectangular panels that are seamed together, with a head opening left at the centre and armhole openings left at the sides. This straightforward construction makes it an excellent introduction to knitted garment assembly. The finished poncho has a classic, timeless silhouette that suits a wide range of body types.

Construction and Techniques

The Clara Poncho is worked entirely flat on a pair of straight knitting needles, meaning each panel is knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round. This technique is ideal for beginners, as it avoids the need for circular needles or complex in-the-round methods. Each of the two panels is cast on and worked to a length of 129cm/50¾in before casting off, creating a long rectangle that folds and seams into the finished poncho shape.

Once both panels are complete, finishing involves joining the centre front and back seams while leaving an opening for the head, then folding the poncho in half and joining the row ends for 40cm/15¾in to form the side seams, with the remainder left open to create the armholes. This simple seaming method means no complex pick-up-and-knit edgings or additional finishing steps are required.

Stitches Used

The Clara Poncho uses a combination of two classic knitting stitches that work beautifully together to create a polished, structured finish:

  • Moss Stitch (Seed Stitch): Formed by alternating knit and purl stitches across the row, moss stitch creates a firm, textured fabric that lies flat and does not curl. In the Clara pattern, moss stitch is used for the border rows at the cast-on and cast-off edges (four rows each), as well as forming a continuous four-stitch moss stitch border running along both side edges of each panel throughout the length of the piece. This gives the poncho a neat, self-finishing edge that requires no additional edging treatment.
  • Stocking Stitch (Stockinette Stitch): The classic combination of knit stitches on right-side rows and purl stitches on wrong-side rows, stocking stitch forms the smooth, V-textured main body of each panel. It knits up quickly and shows off the beautiful colour and texture of the chunky yarn to great effect.

The combination of a stocking stitch body with moss stitch borders is a well-established technique in knitwear design. The moss stitch edges prevent the natural rolling tendency of stocking stitch, keeping the panels flat and the finished garment looking professionally neat.

Materials – Yarn, Needles, and Tension

The pattern calls for the following materials:

  • Yarn: Seven 100g balls of Debbie Bliss Merion in Mist 03. Merion is a chunky weight yarn, making it perfect for quick, satisfying knitting that works up fast on large needles. Its chunky classification means the finished fabric has wonderful drape and warmth — ideal for an outerwear piece like a poncho.
  • Needles: A pair of 8mm (US 11) straight knitting needles.
  • Tension: 12 stitches and 17 rows to 10cm/4in over stocking stitch using 8mm needles. Checking tension before beginning is always recommended to ensure the finished dimensions match those stated in the pattern.
