Claes Jumper – Advanced Men's Cable Knitting Pattern in MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran

The Claes Jumper is a sophisticated, heavily cabled men's pullover sweater designed by MillaMia and knitted in MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran weight yarn. This is a full-sized, wearable garment featuring an intricate arrangement of multiple cable and stitch pattern blocks across the body and sleeves, making it a rewarding project for experienced knitters who want a truly impressive finished piece. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is rated Advanced in skill level.

Garment Overview

The Claes Jumper is a men's knitted sweater worked in multiple distinct pattern sections, each featuring different cable configurations and stitch textures. Rather than a single repeated cable, the design incorporates a variety of pattern blocks and cables throughout, delivering visual interest and technical challenge in equal measure. The finished jumper has a classic, structured silhouette suited to a wide range of chest sizes.

Sizing and Fit

  • To fit chest: 92, 97, 102, 107, 112, and 117 cm (36, 38, 40, 42, 44, and 46 in)
  • Actual chest measurement: 102, 109, 115, 122, 128, and 135 cm (40, 43, 45¼, 48, 50½, and 53 in) – allowing for positive ease
  • Length to shoulder: 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, and 70 cm (25½, 26, 26½, 26¾, 27, and 27½ in)
  • Sleeve length: 48 cm / 19 in across all sizes

Techniques Used

This pattern is constructed using a seamed, worked flat method, meaning the individual pieces – front, back, and sleeves – are knitted separately on straight needles and then joined together by sewing the seams. This traditional construction method gives the finished garment excellent structure and is well suited to heavy cable fabrics.

  • Cables: The defining feature of the Claes Jumper. Multiple cable types are used throughout, including C4F (cable 4 front) and C4B (cable 4 back). C4F involves slipping 2 stitches onto a cable needle held at the front of the work, knitting 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle – creating a left-leaning twist. C4B mirrors this with the cable needle held at the back, producing a right-leaning twist. Together these form the classic rope and plait cable effects characteristic of traditional Aran knetwear.
  • Seamed construction: Pieces are worked flat and seamed together, a technique that adds durability and shape retention to the finished jumper.
  • Worked flat: All pieces are knitted back and forth in rows on straight needles rather than in the round. When working from the pattern's charts, right side rows are read from right to left and wrong side rows from left to right.
  • Stocking stitch (Stockinette stitch): Used as a base fabric in sections of the garment and as the reference for the tension/gauge swatch.
  • Garter stitch: Referenced within the pattern's stitch vocabulary.
  • Moss stitch (Seed stitch in US terminology): Included as part of the varied pattern blocks that give the Claes Jumper its textural complexity.
  • Decreases: Including k2tog (knit two stitches together) for shaping armholes, necklines, and sleeve caps.
  • Increases: Used for sleeve shaping.
  • Chart reading: The pattern includes knitting charts for the cable and stitch pattern sections, an important skill at this advanced level.

Stitches Used

  • C4F – cable 4 front (left-leaning 4-stitch cable cross)
  • C4B – cable 4 back (right-leaning 4-stitch cable cross)
