Citrus Sweater Crochet Pattern – Main Street Yarns Shiny + Soft (Free Downloadable PDF)

The Citrus Sweater is a cheerful, colorful children's crochet sweater pattern available as a free downloadable PDF. Designed for young wearers, this project is rated intermediate in difficulty and is worked in the popular granny stripe style, giving it a playful, textured look that lives up to its bright, citrus-inspired name. The pattern is published for use with Main Street Yarns Shiny + Soft, a worsted weight yarn, and is crocheted using a size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a children's pullover sweater worked in four size options to fit a range of ages and chest measurements:

  • 2–3 years: To fit 22" (56 cm) chest; actual chest 25½" (64.5 cm); length 12½" (31.5 cm); sleeve 11½" (29 cm)
  • 4–5 years: To fit 24" (61 cm) chest; actual chest 27" (68.5 cm); length 13¼" (33.5 cm); sleeve 12½" (31.5 cm)
  • 6–7 years: To fit 26" (66 cm) chest; actual chest 28¾" (73 cm); length 15" (38 cm); sleeve 13¼" (33.5 cm)
  • 8–9 years: To fit 27" (68.5 cm) chest; actual chest 30¼" (77 cm); length 16¾" (40 cm); sleeve 15" (38 cm)

All measurements include the bottom hem and cuff, making the finished garment a comfortable, wearable fit with positive ease built in across every size.

Construction Method

The Citrus Sweater is constructed top-down, beginning at the neck opening and working down to the bottom edge. This approach allows for easy length adjustments and eliminates the need for complex seaming along the body. The sweater body is worked in the round, with turning at the beginning of each round as instructed. Notably, turning chains do not count as stitches throughout the pattern, which simplifies stitch counts and keeps the fabric neat.

A decorative motif is worked separately in the round — without turning — and is sewn on at the end as an appliqué-style embellishment, adding a fun focal point consistent with the citrus theme.

Techniques Used

  • Top-down construction – the garment begins at the neckline and grows downward, making sizing intuitive and fitting easy to check as you go
  • Granny stripe stitch pattern – the signature technique of this sweater, creating columns of double crochet clusters separated by skipped stitches, producing a bold, graphic stripe texture
  • Working in the round – both the body and the separate motif are worked in the round, with the body requiring turning at the start of each round
  • Colorwork with two colors – the pattern references Col. A and Col. B, alternating across specific rounds to create the striped color effect; color changes follow a structured sequence throughout the body rounds
  • Slip stitch joining – rounds are closed with a slip stitch to the top of the first stitch, maintaining a tidy, seamless appearance
  • Motif construction and sewing – the separate motif is crocheted in the round and then hand-sewn onto the finished sweater

Stitches Used

  • Single crochet (sc) – used in the foundation round to establish the neck opening
  • Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch of the granny stripe body, worked in groups of three between existing stitches
  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation chains, turning chains, and as part of corner constructions (e.g., ch 1 spaces within cluster groups)
