Circus Tent Arm Warmers by Ella Austin

What is Being Made

Circus Tent Arm Warmers are a pair of vibrant, colorful knitted arm warmers designed by Ella Austin. These are advanced-level knitting projects featuring bold, eye-catching stranded colorwork patterns inspired by circus tent designs. The arm warmers are available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, making them suitable for various wearers. Each arm warmer is constructed in the round and includes functional afterthought thumbholes for comfortable wear and versatile styling.

Techniques Used

This project employs several advanced knitting techniques that require intermediate to advanced skill levels:

  • Knitting in the Round: The arm warmers are constructed using circular knitting methods, creating seamless tubular garments worked continuously from cast-on to bind-off.
  • Stranded Colorwork: The primary design feature involves stranded colorwork, a technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create intricate patterned designs. This method requires careful tension management and coordination of multiple yarns.
  • Chart Reading: Knitters must follow a detailed stitch chart to execute the colorwork pattern accurately, interpreting symbols and color changes row by row.
  • Afterthought Thumb Method: Rather than knitting thumbholes as part of the initial construction, this technique involves placing stitches on scrap yarn during knitting, then later picking up those stitches to create the thumbhole opening. This approach allows for precise thumb placement and fit.

Stitches Used

The Circus Tent Arm Warmers utilize fundamental knitting stitches combined with colorwork patterning:

  • Knit Stitch (K): The primary stitch throughout the project, used for the main fabric and colorwork sections.
  • Purl Stitch (P): Used in the ribbed edge sections to create texture and elasticity at the cuff.
  • Ribbing (K1, P1): The edge rounds employ alternating knit and purl stitches to create a stretchy, fitted ribbed cuff that helps the arm warmers stay in place.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The base stitch structure for the colorwork pattern sections, creating a smooth fabric surface that showcases the stranded design.

Construction Details

The arm warmers follow a logical construction sequence. Knitters begin by casting on 56, 60, or 64 stitches (depending on size) using the smaller needles and the main color yarn (FC24). The first five rounds establish a K1, P1 ribbed edge that provides elasticity and a polished finish. After completing the ribbed cuff, knitters switch to the larger needles to accommodate the stranded colorwork pattern, which maintains consistent gauge while working with multiple yarn colors.

The colorwork pattern is worked from a chart for 22 rounds, establishing the primary circus tent design. On round 23, the afterthought thumbhole is created by knitting 9 stitches with scrap yarn on each arm warmer (positioned on the left side for the left arm warmer and the right side for the right arm warmer). This scrap yarn is later removed and the live stitches are picked up to create the thumbhole opening. Following the thumbhole placement, the colorwork pattern continues for rounds 24 through 42, with the chart repeated twice more to extend the length of the arm warmers.

Materials and Yarn

The Circus Tent Arm Warmers are designed to be worked in Jamieson and Smith Jumper Weight yarn, a premium wool yarn known for its vibrant colors and excellent stitch definition. The pattern calls for multiple colors to achieve the stranded colorwork design:

  • 1 ball in FC24 (Main Color)
  • 1 ball in FC41
  • 1 ball in 125
  • 1 ball in 001
  • 1 ball in FC17

Needles and Notions

The project requires double-pointed needles (DPNs) in two sizes to accommodate the gauge changes and construction method. Knitters will need 2.5mm DPNs for the ribbed edge sections and 2.75mm DPNs for the main colorwork pattern. The gauge is established at 28 stitches and 36 rows per 10 centimeters when working the stranded colorwork pattern on stockinette stitch. Additional notions include scrap yarn for the afterthought thumb
