Product Description
I LOVE apple cider donuts and have ever since I tried them for the first time at an apple orchard - it's one of my favorite seasonal treats! That memory of sugary apple-y goodness and the beautiful "Cinnamon Cider" colorway from Spargur Yarn Co. inspired the Cider Donut Tam. Rings of seed stitch and garter stitch on a stockinette background provide wonderful texture on the body, while the decreases are sprinkled over the crown like bits of crumbly sugar and cinnamon. The hat is intentionally roomy to allow it to be worn either pulled straight down on the head or slouched to the side. Knit up in worsted or Aran weight yarn, this quick knit will make a cozy addition to your wardrobe as you visit apple orchards or curl up on the porch with a mug of warm cider!
GAUGE:
Brim: 16 sts / 32 rds to 4" / 10 cm in k2, p2 ribbing
Body: Gauge varies based on how aggressively hat is blocked; the sample has a body gauge of approx. 20 sts / 24 rds to 4" / 10cm in stockinette st.
Cider Donut Tam by Meredith Wied
What is Being Made
The Cider Donut Tam is a knitted hat designed by Meredith Wied, inspired by the beloved seasonal treat of apple cider donuts and the "Cinnamon Cider" colorway from Spargur Yarn Co. This tam is a versatile, roomy hat that can be worn pulled straight down on the head or slouched to the side, making it adaptable to different styling preferences. Available in three sizes with brim circumferences of 19", 21", and 23" (48, 53, and 58 cm), the hat is designed as a quick knit project suitable for intermediate knitters.
Techniques and Construction
The Cider Donut Tam features a combination of textured stitch patterns that create visual interest reminiscent of a cinnamon-sugar donut. The crown decreases are intentionally scattered across the top of the hat, resembling crumbly bits of sugar and cinnamon. The body of the hat showcases alternating rings of different stitch patterns layered over a stockinette background, creating dimensional texture throughout the piece. The roomy fit is a deliberate design choice that allows flexibility in how the hat sits on the wearer's head.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch - forms the primary background fabric of the hat body
- Seed stitch - creates textured rings on the hat body
- Garter stitch - provides additional textured rings on the hat body
- Decreases - scattered strategically across the crown for shaping
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Cider Donut Tam is designed to be knit in worsted weight or Aran weight yarn, both of which are medium to medium-heavy yarn weights that work up quickly into a cozy, substantial fabric. The pattern was inspired by and can be worked in the "Cinnamon Cider" colorway from Spargur Yarn Co., though any yarn in these weight categories would be suitable. Knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required to complete this project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with basic stitch patterns, managing decreases, and following pattern instructions. The combination of stockinette, seed stitch, and garter stitch techniques, along with the crown shaping, provides a good skill-building project without being overly complex.
