Product Description
This seed stitch buttoned cowl is a super quick and easy way to use about 100 yards of chunky-weight alpaca yarn. I used exactly 1 skein of Frog Tree Alpaca’s Chunky Alpaca yarn but other options are Cascade Baby Alpaca Chunky, Misti Alpaca Chunky, or Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande (1 skein of any of these).
Chunky Alpaca Cowl by Elizabeth Smith
What Is Being Made
The Chunky Alpaca Cowl is a buttoned cowl designed to be worn as a cozy neck accessory. Unlike traditional cowls that slip over the head, this design features four strategically placed buttonholes at one end, allowing the wearer to close and secure the cowl around the neck for a customizable fit. The finished cowl measures approximately 21 inches by 6 inches when buttoned, making it a substantial and warming accessory suitable for cold weather.
Construction Method
This cowl is worked back and forth in rows using either straight needles or circular needles in a flat construction method, similar to knitting a scarf. Despite being created on circular needles, the piece is not joined into the round; instead, the circular needles serve as a convenient tool for managing the stitches across the width of the project. This approach makes the pattern accessible to knitters who may be more comfortable with flat knitting techniques rather than working in the round.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The primary stitch used throughout this cowl is seed stitch, a fundamental textured stitch that creates a bumpy, reversible fabric with excellent drape and visual interest. Seed stitch is achieved by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern: knit one stitch, purl one stitch, and repeating this sequence across each row. The pattern also incorporates yarn overs (YO) and decreases (k2tog and p2tog) to create the four buttonholes, which are worked strategically along one edge of the piece.
Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques:
- Long-Tail Cast-On: The pattern begins with the Long-Tail Cast-On method, a popular and versatile cast-on technique that creates a flexible, attractive edge suitable for garments.
- Seed Stitch: A basic but effective textured stitch that requires only knit and purl stitches, making it perfect for beginners while still producing a visually appealing fabric.
- Yarn Overs and Decreases: These techniques are used to create the buttonholes, combining yarn overs (which create the hole) with decreases (knit two together and purl two together) to maintain stitch count.
- Row Counting: The pattern requires knitters to work until the piece reaches approximately 22 inches in length, then work the buttonhole row followed by several additional rows to finish the edge.
Materials Required
The Chunky Alpaca Cowl is designed to be a quick, satisfying project requiring minimal yardage. The pattern calls for approximately 100 yards of bulky-weight yarn, which equates to just one skein of the recommended yarn. The pattern is shown worked in Chunky Alpaca by Frog Tree, a premium yarn composed of 100% alpaca fiber with a yardage of 109 yards per 100-gram skein. Alpaca yarn is prized for its softness, warmth, and luxurious feel against the skin, making it an excellent choice for a cowl that will be worn close to the neck and face.
Needles and Tools
This project requires US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches in length. The 24-inch length provides ample space for the 23 cast-on stitches while remaining manageable for flat knitting. Four buttons are needed to close the cowl at the buttonholes, though the pattern does not specify button size or material—allowing knitters to choose buttons that complement their chosen yarn color and personal style.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches and 15 rows over 4 inches in seed stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is important for ensuring the finished cowl matches the intended dimensions of 21 inches by 6 inches. Knitters should take time to knit a gauge swatch in seed stitch before beginning the project, adjusting needle size if necessary to match the specified gauge.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those seeking a straightforward, satisfying project. The pattern uses only basic stitches (knit and purl), a simple stitch pattern (seed stitch), and straightforward shaping
