Product Description
These gift/goody bags work up quickly in worsted weight yarn, and because they only use a few yards of each color, they are great stash busters. Most are easy to personalize by using different colors and adding embellishments.
For the tree goody bag, there are many variations possible. I used plastic footballs and baseballs for sports fans, camouflage yarn with a deer on top for hunters, pink beads and a pink ribbon for breast cancer survivors.
Materials you will need: Small amounts of worsted weight yarn (some bags make use of other yarns such as eyelash) Size H crochet hook Yarn needle Fiberfil Google eyes, pompoms, buttons, jingle bells, ribbons
Christmas Tree Gift Bag by Lisa Ferrel
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a festive Christmas tree gift bag designed by Lisa Ferrel. The finished project measures approximately 4 1/2" tall by 3 1/2" wide, making it an ideal size for holding small gifts, treats, or holiday decorations. The bag combines functional design with decorative appeal, featuring a drawstring closure and embellished tree appearance.
What Is Being Made
The Christmas Tree Gift Bag is a small decorative storage piece perfect for holiday gifting and seasonal décor. It functions as a drawstring pouch with a tree-shaped silhouette, combining practicality with festive aesthetics. The bag can be customized with various embellishments to suit individual style preferences.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs several key crochet techniques to achieve its finished look:
- Single Crochet (sc): The foundation stitch used throughout the body of the bag for structure and stability
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between rows
- Chain Stitch (ch): Utilized for creating the drawstring casing and decorative elements
- Crocodile Stitch: A dimensional stitch technique that adds texture and visual interest to the tree design, creating a scaled, overlapping appearance reminiscent of crocodile scales
Stitches and Construction Details
The pattern works in continuous rounds to build the bag structure. Rounds 17-18 establish the final dimensions by working even on 20 single crochets. Round 19 creates the drawstring casing through a combination of single crochet and chain stitches, with the pattern instruction *Sc next sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, * repeat around creating evenly spaced loops for the drawstring to pass through.
The crocodile stitch embellishment is applied after the main bag structure is complete, using the instruction *sl st into the space of croc, ch 8,* repeat around. This dimensional stitch technique is noted as being accessible for crocheters willing to practice, adding significant visual depth without excessive difficulty.
Materials Required
The Christmas Tree Gift Bag requires minimal yardage, making it an economical project:
- Yarn: Small amounts of worsted weight yarn in brown and green
- Crochet Hook: Size H hook
- Notions: Red metallic craft trim, silver star button, yarn needle for weaving in ends and sewing embellishments
Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level
This pattern is designed for intermediate crocheters and works with worsted and aran weight yarns. The intermediate skill level reflects the inclusion of the crocodile stitch technique, which requires understanding of basic stitches and the ability to execute a more complex stitch pattern. The pattern notes that the crocodile stitch, while appearing intricate, is "not at all hard to master" with practice.
Customization and Finishing Options
The pattern encourages creative personalization through various decoration methods. Options include ribbons, beads, lace, sequins, felt cut-outs, or artificial snow spray for a wintry appearance. The example shown in the pattern photo features red metallic craft trim and a silver star button sewn to Round 19, though the pattern emphasizes that "the possibilities are endless." When sewing embellishments, care should be taken not to sew through the drawstring casing, which would compromise functionality.
Finishing Touches
The drawstring is created separately using green yarn fashioned into a 12" chain with knotted ends. This drawstring is then threaded through the loops created in Round 19, allowing the bag to be cinched closed. All yarn ends are woven in to complete the project.
