Chocolate in Any Language Cross Stitch Pattern – PDF by Kooler Design Studio

Designed by Linda Gillum for Kooler Design Studio, Chocolate in Any Language (KDS# 1449) is a charming counted cross stitch embroidery design celebrating everyone's favorite indulgence. Released as part of the Kooler Classic Charts collection, this downloadable PDF pattern is rated as a beginner-friendly project and is perfectly suited for creating finished decorations — think framed pieces, decorative pillows, or seasonal home accents that make wonderful handmade gifts.

What Is Being Made

The finished piece is a decorative embroidery design featuring the theme of chocolate expressed across multiple languages, making it a playful and universally appealing wall decoration or home accent. With a stitch count of 163 wide by 92 high, the design produces a generously sized finished piece. On 14-count Aida fabric, the stitched area measures approximately 11⅝ inches wide by 6½ inches tall, making it ideal for standard frames. Stitchers working on other fabric counts can expect the following finished sizes:

  • 10 Count: approximately 14¾ inches wide by 8¼ inches tall
  • 16 Count: approximately 10⅛ inches wide by 5¾ inches tall
  • 18 Count: approximately 9 inches wide by 5 inches tall

As with all counted cross stitch projects, it is recommended to add 4 to 6 inches to each measurement when cutting your fabric to allow for framing and finishing.

Fabric and Materials

The design is intended to be stitched on 14-Count White Aida fabric, the most popular and widely available evenweave fabric for counted cross stitch. Aida cloth features a clearly defined grid of holes that makes it easy for beginners to count and place stitches accurately. However, the pattern's stitch count information allows experienced stitchers to adapt the design to other fabric counts, including 10, 16, and 18 count, to achieve their preferred finished size.

The pattern calls for DMC stranded cotton embroidery floss, a premium, widely trusted brand known for its consistent color quality and broad color range. Before stitching, it is recommended to wash floss in warm water with mild soap and rinse thoroughly to remove excess dye, then lay flat to dry to ensure color fastness in the finished piece.

DMC Floss Colors Used

  • DMC 402 – warm peach/mahogany light
  • DMC 666 – bright red
  • DMC 738 – tan/very light
  • DMC 743 – medium yellow
  • DMC 798 – dark Delft blue
  • DMC 809 – Delft blue
  • DMC 912 – light emerald green
  • DMC 938 – ultra dark coffee brown
  • DMC 3608 – very light plum
  • DMC 3772 – very dark desert sand
  • DMC 3773 – medium desert sand

Techniques and Stitches Used

This pattern employs several classic counted cross stitch techniques that together create a detailed, polished finished design:

  • Full Cross Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the design, worked with 3 strands of DMC floss. A full cross stitch is formed by two diagonal stitches crossing over one another to fill a single square on the Aida grid, creating solid blocks of color that form the overall image.
  • Quarter Stitch (¼ Stitch): Also worked with 3 strands, quarter stitches fill only one quarter of a fabric square and are used to add refined curves and detail to the design, particularly useful for rounded lettering
