Product Description
Chloe Set in Berroco Sesame – Knitted Beret and Cowl Pattern by Alison Green
The Chloe Set is a coordinating knitted accessories collection designed by Alison Green and published by Berroco. The set comprises two pieces: a classic beret and a generous cowl, both worked in the same yarn and sharing a unified stitch pattern that gives the finished set a polished, cohesive look. The pattern is rated Easy and is well suited to knitters who are comfortable working in the round and managing basic shaping techniques. It is available as a downloadable PDF, making it immediately accessible after purchase.
About the Yarn: Berroco Sesame
Both pieces are knitted exclusively in Berroco Sesame, a worsted weight yarn sold in 100-gram skeins. The colorway featured in the pattern is #7454 Hibiscus. Remarkably, the entire set requires only 2 balls total — 1 ball is sufficient for the beret alone, while 2 balls are needed for the cowl or to complete the full set. Berroco Sesame's worsted weight provides excellent stitch definition, which is especially important for the textured pattern stitch used throughout both pieces. A tapestry needle is also required for finishing.
The Beret
Finished Measurements
The beret is designed with a 16-inch (41 cm) band circumference, making it a snug, well-fitting hat suitable for a wide range of adult head sizes when blocked to the specified gauge.
Needles Required
- 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle, size US 8 / 5 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge) — used for the main body of the beret
- Double-pointed needles (dpns), size US 8 / 5 mm — used for casting on and working the initial garter band
- Double-pointed needles, size US 7 / 4.5 mm — used during crown decreases as the stitch count reduces
- 1 stitch marker
Construction and Techniques
The beret is worked entirely in the round, beginning with a cast-on of 70 stitches on double-pointed needles. The foundation is a garter band created by alternating purl and knit rounds — a technique that produces a neat, non-curling ribbed edge without traditional ribbing. After the garter band is established, stitches are transferred to the longer circular needle and increased in two stages using M1 (make one) increases to build the crown volume characteristic of a beret silhouette. The body of the hat is then worked in the signature pattern stitch (described in detail below). Crown shaping is achieved through decreases that taper the hat to a neat finish at the top, with the final stitches worked on double-pointed needles as the round becomes too small for the circular needle.
Gauge
For the beret, the target gauge is 25 stitches and 30 rounds = 4 inches (10 cm) in pattern on the smaller circular needle, with one pattern repeat measuring approximately 2¼ inches (6 cm). Gauge is measured after blocking, which is an important step for achieving accurate finished dimensions.
The Cowl
Finished Measurements
The cowl measures approximately 29 inches (73.5 cm) in circumference and 11½ inches (29 cm) in height, making it a substantial, wrap-worthy accessory that can be worn as a single loop or doubled up for extra warmth.
Needles Required
- 24-inch (60 cm) circular needle, size US 9 / 5.5 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge)
- 1 stitch marker
Construction and Techniques
The cowl is also worked entirely in the round on a longer circular needle to accommodate its wider circumference. Like the beret, it features the same repeating pattern stitch
