Chill Graph Beanie by Sincerely Pam
What Is Being Made
The Chill Graph Beanie is a crochet hat pattern designed by Sincerely Pam, available in three sizes ranging from toddler to adult. This beanie features a two-color colorwork design created using graph crochet techniques, allowing crafters to incorporate custom patterns or designs into the finished hat. The pattern includes optional pompom embellishment for added visual interest.
Sizes and Finished Dimensions
- Toddler: 18-19" head circumference, 7.5" hat height
- Child: 19-20" head circumference, 8" hat height
- Adult: 20-22" head circumference, 8.5" hat height
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs graph crochet methodology, a technique that uses charted patterns to create colorwork designs similar to knitting intarsia or fair isle. The pattern utilizes back loop only (BLO) single crochet stitching throughout, which creates a textured fabric with defined rows ideal for graph pattern work. The construction uses a two-hook approach: a smaller hook for the ribbed band and a larger hook for the body, creating a fitted cuff that contrasts with the more relaxed crown.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch): Foundation and turning chains
- Single Crochet (sc): Primary stitch throughout the pattern, worked in back loop only
- Slip Stitch (slst): Used for joining rounds and finishing
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 2 colors of worsted weight yarn (also known as #4 medium weight). The sample was created using Lion Brand Yarn Vanna's Choice in Taupe and Cranberry, providing excellent stitch definition and durability for everyday wear.
Hooks: Two different hook sizes are used to achieve proper gauge and structure. A G hook (4.5 mm) is used for the band, creating a tighter, more elastic cuff. A J hook (6 mm) is used for the body, allowing for looser, more fluid stitching in the main crown section.
Additional Supplies: A tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling color changes, a measuring tape for checking gauge and sizing, and optional pompom materials for embellishment.
Gauge
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern. Using the 4.5 mm hook, the gauge is 18 single crochet stitches in back loop only and 16 rows measuring 4" x 4". Using the 6 mm hook, the gauge is 15 single crochet stitches in back loop only and 14 rows measuring 4" x 4". Checking gauge before beginning ensures the finished hat will fit the intended size.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork techniques. The graph crochet method requires attention to pattern reading and color changes, but the straightforward stitch repertoire and clear construction make it accessible to those progressing beyond beginner projects.
