Chick with Nest Pot Creme Egg Choc Cover

What is Being Made

This is a knitted egg cozy designed to hold a cream egg or chocolate egg in a decorative nest setting. The project creates a charming chick figure nestled within a knitted nest structure, making it both a functional kitchen accessory and a delightful decorative piece. The finished item is suitable for Easter celebrations, egg-themed entertaining, or as a whimsical kitchen decoration.

Difficulty Level

This is a beginner-friendly knitting project designed by Andrew Lucas. The straightforward stitch patterns and simple shaping make it accessible to knitters who are just starting their crafting journey.

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques that build essential skills:

  • Casting on to create the initial stitches for the nest base
  • Stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) for smooth fabric sections
  • Garter stitch (knitting every row) for textured areas
  • Increases to shape and expand sections of the design
  • Decreases (including k2tog and p2tog) to taper and reduce stitches for shaping
  • Binding off using the bind and tie method, which involves threading yarn through remaining stitches on the needle and securing them
  • Seaming by stitching row ends together to construct the three-dimensional nest form
  • Folding and securing techniques to add internal structure and firmness to the finished piece

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes core knitting stitches suitable for beginners:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch creating the base of all knitting
  • Purl stitch (p) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination to create stocking stitch
  • Stocking stitch (st st) – alternating rows of knit and purl stitches that produce a smooth, classic fabric
  • Garter stitch (gs) – created by knitting every row, producing a textured, ridged fabric
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease that reduces stitch count and creates shaping
  • Purl two together (p2tog) – a decrease worked on purl rows for consistent shaping

Materials Required

This project requires minimal materials, making it economical and suitable for using yarn scraps:

  • Needles: 3.25mm knitting needles
  • Yarn: Double knitting weight wool in multiple colors – brown for the nest base, yellow and orange for the chick, and black for details such as eyes. The pattern calls for oddments (small leftover pieces), so this is an excellent stash-busting project
  • Stuffing: A small amount of polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material to add dimension and firmness to the chick and nest structure
  • Additional tools: A tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and executing the bind and tie finishing technique

Pattern Structure

The nest is constructed in sections using a dividing row technique. The knitter begins with 24 cast-on stitches and works in stocking stitch before reaching a dividing knit row that serves as a structural fold point. Subsequent sections continue with stocking stitch and garter stitch variations, incorporating strategic decreases to shape the nest's form. The decreases progress from k2tog combinations to p2tog, gradually reducing from 18 stitches to 12 stitches to 6 stitches at the final closure. The nest is then seamed along the row ends and folded at the dividing row to create internal structure and support for the egg holder.
