Product Description
These socks would be ideal for intermediate sock knitters who would like to try adding a zig-zag pattern to their socks.
The design for these socks was inspired by fondness of self-striping yarns. I wanted a stocking stitch design with just a little bit of pattern that would not compete with my stripey yarn. By combining a chevron design (which is essentially a zig zag pattern) with this self-striping yarn, I have managed to create a pattern that compliments all the striping colours of this yarn.
I’m also hoping to help knitters understand how cuff down socks with a traditional gusset develop with this very simple yet elegant sock pattern.
Pattern contains links to three tutorial videos on my YouTube channel to help with various techniques used while knitting these socks.
Chevron Socks by Amanda (Shuttermonkey)
What is Being Made
These are cuff-down socks designed in a medium size with a finished foot circumference of 8 inches (20.3 cm) and 64 stitches. The socks feature a chevron or zig-zag stitch pattern that complements self-striping yarn while maintaining an elegant, understated aesthetic. The design is particularly suited for knitters who want to explore adding texture and visual interest to their sock projects without overwhelming the yarn's natural color variations.
Design Inspiration and Concept
Designer Amanda Clark created these socks with a specific goal in mind: to showcase self-striping yarns while incorporating a subtle stitch pattern. The chevron design—which is essentially a zig-zag pattern—was chosen to work harmoniously with the multiple striping colors in the yarn rather than compete with them. This thoughtful approach results in a pattern that enhances the yarn's inherent beauty while providing visual texture through stitch definition.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Cuff-down construction: The socks are knit from the cuff downward, a traditional method that allows for easy adjustments and a comfortable fit
- Traditional gusset: The pattern includes a gusset structure, which is a key element in sock construction that provides shaping around the heel and ankle area
- Stocking stitch base: The primary fabric is worked in stocking stitch, providing a smooth, classic sock fabric that showcases both the yarn colors and the chevron pattern
- Chevron or zig-zag patterning: A simple yet elegant stitch pattern that creates diagonal lines across the sock
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern combines stocking stitch as the foundation fabric with chevron stitch work to create the zig-zag visual effect. This combination is described as "very simple yet elegant," making it accessible for intermediate knitters while still providing enough interest to enhance the finished garment. The stitch pattern is designed to integrate seamlessly with the self-striping yarn's color changes.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The socks are worked using 4-ply yarn weight, which is ideal for creating well-fitting, durable socks with good stitch definition. The pattern calls for two colors of The Cozy Knitter Bliss yarn:
- Colour 1: 241 meters / 264 yards (the main self-striping yarn)
- Colour 2: 73 meters / 80 yards (pink contrast yarn used for heels, toes, and cuffs)
The socks are knit on 2.25mm double-pointed needles, which is the standard needle size for 4-ply sock knitting and ensures appropriate gauge and fabric density.
Skill Level and Knitter Suitability
This pattern is designed for intermediate sock knitters who have experience with basic sock construction and are ready to expand their skills by incorporating stitch patterns into their sock projects. The pattern serves an educational purpose, helping knitters understand how cuff-down socks with traditional gussets develop, making it an excellent stepping stone for those looking to move beyond simple stockinette sock patterns.
