Product Description

Before living in California, I had never seen or tasted a Cherry Plum. This series of patterns was inspired by the cherry plum tree in my front yard and its abundance of fruit.

This cowl is worked flat to full length and then sewn together to create the cowl. I recommend using your favorite worsted weight yarn that holds a good stitch definition with a gentle drape. Options include: superwash wool, acrylic, even cotton.

Cherry Plum Cowl by Fitzhenry Knits

Project Overview

The Cherry Plum Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Fitzhenry Knits, inspired by the cherry plum tree and its abundant fruit. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a cozy, wearable cowl using classic knitting techniques.

What Is Being Made

A cowl—a close-fitting neck garment that provides warmth and style. This particular design is worked in a flat panel and then seamed together to form the finished cowl, making it an accessible project for knitters seeking to practice fundamental construction methods.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting: The cowl is worked flat to full length before assembly, allowing knitters to work in rows rather than in the round
  • Seaming: The completed flat panel is sewn together to create the cowl structure
  • Optional provisional cast on: For knitters seeking a seamless finish, the pattern offers the option to use a provisional cast on and finish with grafting instead of traditional seaming
  • Length customization: Knitters may add an additional 24 rows (approximately 3.5 inches) to achieve a looser drape if desired

Stitches and Stitch Definition

The pattern is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the foundational knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric with excellent stitch definition. This stitch choice ensures the yarn's color and texture remain clearly visible throughout the finished piece.

Yarn and Materials

The Cherry Plum Cowl is designed for worsted weight yarn that holds good stitch definition with a gentle drape. The pattern recommends 250 yards of yarn such as Knit Picks Brava Worsted or any comparable worsted weight option. Suitable fiber options include superwash wool, acrylic, or cotton, giving knitters flexibility in fiber choice based on personal preference, care requirements, and budget.

Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows over a 4 inch by 4 inch (10 cm by 10 cm) square in stockinette stitch using worsted weight yarn.

Needles: US size 4.5mm (#7) needles for working flat, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge with your chosen yarn.

Skill Level and Accessibility

While labeled as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is described as easy in the PDF, making it an approachable project for knitters with some foundational experience. The straightforward flat construction and simple stitch pattern allow knitters to focus on technique refinement without overwhelming complexity.
