Check-Mate Basket Stitch Sweater with Separate Cowl by Pat Menchini
Garment Overview
The Check-Mate is a bold knitted sweater featuring a distinctive basket stitch pattern as its primary design element. This intermediate-level knitting project is designed by Pat Menchini and comes as a downloadable PDF pattern. The sweater is accompanied by a separate buttoned cowl that can be worn as an additional layering piece, adding versatility to the finished garment.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a complete sweater set consisting of two components: a fitted pullover sweater with the signature basket stitch texture throughout, and a coordinating cowl collar with button closures. The sweater is designed to fit bust measurements ranging from 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) up to 127-132 cm (50-52 inches), accommodating six different size options. The garment features sleeve length of approximately 46-48 cm (18-19 inches) and length to shoulder shaping of 57-61 cm (22½-24 inches), depending on the size selected.
Knitting Techniques Used
The primary technique featured in this design is the basket stitch, which creates a bold textured pattern across the sweater's body and sleeves. Basket stitch is a classic knitting technique that produces a woven appearance by alternating groups of knit and purl stitches in a coordinated pattern. This intermediate-level technique requires careful attention to stitch placement and row counting to maintain the pattern's visual integrity across the garment pieces.
The pattern also incorporates standard sweater construction methods including shaping at the armholes and shoulders, sleeve cap shaping, and the integration of a separate cowl component with button closures. The use of two different needle sizes—5 mm and 6 mm—indicates that ribbed edgings are likely used to frame the neckline, cuffs, and hem, with the larger needles used for the main stitch pattern.
Stitches and Stitch Details
- Basket Stitch: The main pattern stitch creating the bold textured appearance throughout the sweater
- Stockinette Stitch: Used as the base tension measurement (14 stitches and 19 rows to 10 cm over stockinette stitch using 6 mm needles), indicating this stitch is likely used in sections or as a reference for gauge
- Ribbing: Worked on 5 mm needles for edgings and finishing details
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Check-Mate pattern calls for Rico Melange Chunky yarn in the shade Curry-Green, 039. This chunky-weight yarn provides the bold texture necessary for the basket stitch pattern to stand out visually. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 10 balls for the smallest size (76-81 cm bust) to 14 balls for the largest sizes (117-122 cm and 127-132 cm bust). Each 50g ball contains 85 metres (92 yards) of yarn, allowing crafters to calculate total yardage needed for their chosen size.
The pattern specifies 5 mm (UK 6, US 8) and 6 mm (UK 4, US 10) knitting needles for construction. The 6 mm needles are used for the main stitch pattern, while the smaller 5 mm needles are employed for ribbed edgings and finishing. Additional notions include 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction and 3 buttons for the separate cowl component, allowing for adjustable fit and styling options.
Gauge and Tension
The pattern specifies a tension of 14 stitches and 19 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stockinette stitch using 6 mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the finished garment to match the intended measurements and fit properly. Knitters are advised to work a gauge swatch before beginning the main project and to select replacement yarn carefully if the original Rico Melange Chunky becomes unavailable, ensuring the substitute yarn matches the stated tension.
Skill Level and Suitability
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Check-Mate Basket Stitch Sweater is suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with textured stitch patterns and managing garment shaping. The basket stitch pattern requires consistent attention to pattern repeats, making it an engaging project for those looking to expand their stitch repertoire beyond basic stockinette and rib
