Product Description

I love wearing triangular shawls, but sometimes that much fabric is too warm, or sometimes I don’t want to worry about trailing extra ends through my food, or sometimes I want something that I don’t have to worry about coming loose or falling off while I’m out and about.

Cervid fills all my stylistic desires without any of the hangups that can come with my beloved shawls. The triangular front of the cowl grows out of staghorn cables, one of my favorite motifs.

Cervid is worked flat from the bottom point, then additional sts are cast on for the back neck and the cowl is worked in the round to finish.

Pattern includes charted and written instructions.

Cervid Cowl by Kat Riddell

What Is Being Made

Cervid is a triangular cowl design created by independent designer Kat Riddell. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a distinctive neck accessory with a pointed silhouette, combining the warmth and coverage of a traditional cowl with the elegant drape of a triangular shawl. The finished cowl measures 22.5 inches in circumference, extends 14 inches from top to point, and features a 5-inch back collar depth, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various necklines and styling preferences.

Techniques and Stitches Used

Cervid employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The pattern utilizes a 2x2 rib stitch as the primary fabric structure, which creates vertical columns of alternating knit and purl stitches that provide excellent stretch and recovery. This ribbed construction is complemented by cable stitches, specifically Cable Four Right (C4R) and Cable Four Left (C4L), which add textural interest and visual depth to the design. These cable techniques involve placing stitches on a cable needle and holding them to the back or front while working subsequent stitches, creating the characteristic twisted rope-like appearance.

The pattern also incorporates make one increases, including both Make One Right (M1R) and Make One Left (M1L) techniques. These increases are worked by inserting the left-hand needle into the yarn below existing stitches and knitting into the front or back loop, creating nearly invisible new stitches that shape the triangular silhouette. The combination of these shaping techniques with the cable and rib stitches produces a structured yet flexible garment.

Materials and Tools

The Cervid pattern calls for 100 yards of bulky-weight yarn, with Malabrigo Yarn Chunky in the colorway "Frank Ochre" suggested as an ideal fiber choice. This yardage requirement makes the project economical and quick to complete. Knitters will need a US 10 (6.0mm) 16-inch circular needle to accommodate the cowl's circumference and work in the round. Additional notions include 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends upon completion.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 13.5 stitches and 21 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in 2x2 rib. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and ensuring proper fit around the neck. The finished cowl dimensions—22.5 inches circumference, 14 inches length from top to point, and 5 inches back collar depth—create a balanced accessory that provides substantial coverage without excessive bulk.

Skill Level

Cervid is classified as a beginner-friendly pattern, making it an excellent introduction to cowl construction and cable techniques. While the design incorporates cables and shaping increases, the straightforward stitch patterns and clear abbreviations guide newer knitters through the process. The bulky yarn weight works quickly on larger needles, allowing crafters to see progress rapidly and complete the project in a reasonable timeframe.
