Product Description
Cate's Wrap is a tribute to the beautiful, knitted design, Nymphalidea by Melinda VerMeer. It is worked in two lace weight yarns--one with gradual color changes, and the other in a sharply contrasting color. The yarns are not cut but are carried up the side. Cate's Wrap is worked like a triangle with short rows along one side. The short rows curve the wrap and gradually form it into a crescent shape.
Dimensions: (pre-blocking) 67 in. (170 cm) from tip to tip and 16 in. (40.6 cm) at widest point; (post-blocking) 75 in. (190.5 cm) from tip to tip and 16 in. (40.6 cm) at widest point
Stitches used: chain, foundation single crochet, single crochet
The 8-page pattern pdf includes 11 photos. Most are progress photos and blocking photos.
When I finished crocheting, I had 25 g (38%) of my contrasting color remaining and 19 g (19%) of my main color remaining.
Cate's Wrap: Crochet Shawl Design
Project Overview
Cate's Wrap is an intermediate-level crochet shawl design created by Julie Blagojevich. This downloadable PDF pattern presents a crescent-shaped wrap that draws inspiration from the knitted design Nymphalidea by Melinda VerMeer. The wrap is constructed using a unique two-yarn technique with lace weight yarns in contrasting colors, creating visual depth and sophistication in the finished piece.
Construction Method and Shaping
The wrap is worked in a triangular construction with strategic short rows positioned along one side. The short row technique is essential to the design, as it gradually curves the fabric and transforms the initial triangle into an elegant crescent shape. This shaping method allows the wrap to drape beautifully when worn. The two yarns used throughout the project are not cut during construction; instead, they are carried up the side of the work, maintaining continuity and creating a seamless integration of both colors throughout the piece.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for two distinct lace weight yarns that work together to create striking color contrast:
- Schoppel Lace Ball – One 100g ball (800 meters) in the colorway "Deine Blauen Augen" (Your Blue Eyes). This yarn is composed of 75% wool and 25% nylon, providing elasticity and durability suitable for lace work.
- Miss Babs "Isadora" – One 65g hank (600 yards) in the colorway "Roasted Pumpkin." This yarn blend contains 70% Merino Wool and 30% Tussah Silk, offering softness and subtle sheen.
- Hook – Size 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook
Skill Level and Techniques
Cate's Wrap is rated as an intermediate crochet project, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced shaping techniques. The primary techniques employed include lace weight yarn work, two-color yarn management, and short row shaping. Mastery of these techniques allows crafters to create sophisticated, professionally finished garments with complex draping and dimensional shaping.
Design Inspiration and Naming
The pattern is named in honor of Cate, a talented knitter and crafter. While the design draws creative inspiration from the knitted original, Julie Blagojevich has adapted it specifically for crochet construction, demonstrating how techniques can be translated across different fiber crafts to achieve similar aesthetic results.
