Product Description
This blanket is specially designed for rescue cats (or dogs). My local shelter prefers knitted blanket as they don't have big holes, like some crochet blankets. This blanket is designed with little kitties in mind and no holes for them to get their tiny paws stuck.
I made my blanket with worsted weight yarn and a 6mm hook, but you can really use any yarn you like just use a hook size recommended on your yarn ball band. This is a great stash busting project and the blanket can easily be made any size.
Cat Blanket No.1 by Lullaby Lodge
Project Overview
Cat Blanket No.1 is a thoughtfully designed crochet blanket created by Lullaby Lodge specifically with rescue cats and kittens in mind. This intermediate-level project produces a cozy square blanket measuring approximately 85 x 85 cm (33 x 33 inches), making it an ideal size for feline companions. The blanket is designed to be safe for kittens, with special attention paid to fabric construction to prevent small paws from getting caught.
What You'll Create
This project results in a finished crochet blanket featuring a dense, sturdy fabric construction. The blanket's square format and generous dimensions make it suitable for use as a cat bed, throw, or cozy retreat space for rescue cats. The pattern emphasizes safety and comfort for feline users through its specialized stitch selection and fabric density.
Techniques and Construction
The Cat Blanket No.1 employs specialized crochet techniques to create a secure, hole-free fabric. The primary technique used is the linked double crochet stitch, which creates a particularly dense construction. This stitch is worked by inserting the hook into the horizontal bar of the previous stitch, yarning over and pulling through a loop, then inserting into the next stitch, yarning over to pull up a loop, and completing the stitch by pulling yarn through two loops twice. This method of construction ensures there are no gaps or holes where tiny paws could become caught, prioritizing safety for kittens and small rescue cats.
Stitches Used
- Linked double crochet (ldc) – the primary stitch creating the dense, secure fabric
- Double crochet (dc) – standard stitch used in construction
- Single crochet (sc) – foundational stitch for shaping and edges
- Chain (ch) – used for foundation and stitch spacing
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining and finishing
Materials and Tools
This pattern is designed as a stash-busting project, allowing crocheters to use yarn from their existing collection. The blanket calls for Aran or Worsted weight yarn, providing flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining consistent results. A 6mm (US size J) crochet hook is used throughout the project. Gauge is noted as not essential for this particular project, making it accessible for crafters who prefer to work without precise gauge measurements. The pattern uses US crochet terminology with UK conversions provided for international crocheters.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with specialty stitches. The linked double crochet technique requires understanding of basic stitch mechanics and the ability to follow detailed stitch instructions, making it an excellent project for developing advanced crochet skills.
