Cardigans & Sweater in Stylecraft Wondersoft Prints DK – Pattern 9476

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Stylecraft includes three separate designs for babies and toddlers: a Round Neck Cardigan, a V Neck Cardigan, and a Sweater. All three garments are worked in Wondersoft Prints DK yarn and feature easy lace detailing, making them ideal for knitters with some experience who want to create beautiful, delicate knitwear for little ones. Importantly, the pattern also includes premature baby sizes, making it a thoughtful and inclusive resource for those knitting for the tiniest newborns.

Sizes and Fit

The pattern covers a generous range of sizes to suit babies and toddlers from premature through to 2–3 years old. The six sizes correspond to the following chest measurements:

  • Premature: 31 cm / 12 in chest, 36 cm / 14 in actual measurement
  • Newborn: 36 cm / 14 in chest, 41 cm / 16 in actual measurement
  • 0–6 months: 41 cm / 16 in chest, 47 cm / 18½ in actual measurement
  • 6–12 months: 46 cm / 18 in chest, 52 cm / 20½ in actual measurement
  • 12–24 months: 51 cm / 20 in chest, 56 cm / 22 in actual measurement
  • 2–3 years: 56 cm / 22 in chest, 61 cm / 24 in actual measurement

Full lengths range from 17 cm (6½ in) for premature up to 33 cm (13 in) for the 2–3 year size, and sleeve lengths range from 8 cm (3 in) to 24 cm (9½ in), ensuring a well-proportioned fit at every stage of growth.

The Three Designs

Round Neck Cardigan

The Round Neck Cardigan is a classic baby cardigan with a neat, comfortable round neckline. It is shown in Wondersoft Prints DK in the colourway Tutti Frutti 1299, a playful multicoloured print that adds visual interest without the need for complex colourwork. The round neck shaping creates a gentle, enclosed neckline that is practical for dressing and undressing babies. This cardigan fastens with 4 buttons for the two smallest sizes, increasing to 6 buttons for the larger sizes, providing a secure and adjustable fit.

V Neck Cardigan

The V Neck Cardigan offers a slightly more tailored look with its angled neckline, shown in Miss Muffet 1294. The V neck shaping requires careful decreasing on either side of the front opening to achieve the characteristic diagonal lines leading to the neckline. This design uses 3 buttons for the smaller sizes, increasing to 4 buttons for the larger sizes. Like the round neck version, it incorporates the easy lace pattern detailing that gives all three designs in this collection their delicate, heirloom quality.

Sweater

The Sweater is a pull-on design with no button fastenings, shown in Alice 1726. It is worked using stitch holders to manage the shoulder and neckline construction, a common technique in seamless or partially seamless knitting that allows stitches to be held live and joined or picked up later. The sweater's lace detailing ties it visually to the two cardigans, making all three designs cohesive as a collection.

Techniques and Construction

All three garments are described as featuring easy lace designs, making this pattern an excellent introduction to lace knitting for those new to the technique. Lace knitting typically involves a combination of yarn overs and decreases worked in a set sequence to create decorative eyelets and openwork patterns. The pattern uses several yarn-over methods, reflecting standard British knitting terminology:

  • yfwd (yarn forward) – used to create a yarn over between two knit stitches
