Hayfield Chunky Tweed Cardigan – Knitting Pattern 7492

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Hayfield provides full instructions for a classic raglan-sleeved cardigan worked in Hayfield Chunky Tweed yarn. The design is available in six sizes, covering chest and bust measurements from 61/66 cm (24/26 in) up to 112/117 cm (44/46 in), making it a versatile pattern suitable for children through to adults. The finished cardigan features a neat ribbed border, a button band, and a comfortable, relaxed silhouette with actual measurements ranging from 71 cm to 120 cm around the body.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a full-length cardigan with set-in raglan sleeves, ribbed cuffs and lower edges, and a button fastening. Full lengths range from approximately 40 cm (15¾ in) for the smallest size up to 62 cm (24½ in) for the largest, with sleeve lengths from 33 cm (13 in) to 48 cm (19 in), noted as adjustable to suit individual preference. The garment is constructed in separate pieces — a back, a left front, a right front, and two sleeves — which are then seamed together. The raglan shaping gives the cardigan a classic, timeless structure that suits a wide range of body types.

Techniques Used

  • Thumb method cast-on – used throughout for casting on stitches at the start of each piece, providing a neat and elastic edge well suited to chunky-weight yarn.
  • Raglan shaping – stitches are decreased at set intervals on both the body pieces and the sleeves to create the characteristic diagonal raglan seam line, a technique that requires careful row counting and symmetrical decreasing on both sides.
  • Ribbing – a k1, p1 rib is worked at the lower edges and cuffs to provide stretch and a tidy finish. The rib rows are clearly set out in the pattern before transitioning to the main fabric.
  • Stocking stitch (st-st) – the main body fabric is worked entirely in stocking stitch, knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, giving a smooth, classic appearance that showcases the tweed effect of the yarn.
  • Decreasing – techniques including k2tog (knit two together) and p2sso (pass slipped stitch over) are used to shape the raglan armholes and any other shaping sections, ensuring clean, directional decreases.
  • Working with stitch holders – stitches are placed on holders at various points, particularly around the neckline, allowing the knitter to return to them when working the neckband or finishing.
  • Button band construction – the front bands incorporate the buttonhole placement for 6 buttons (sizes 61/66 to 81/86 cm) or 7 buttons (sizes 91/97 cm and above), requiring careful spacing and neat buttonhole working.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – the foundation stitch used across right-side rows in stocking stitch and as part of the k1, p1 rib pattern.
  • Purl (p) – worked on wrong-side rows in stocking stitch and alternated with knit stitches in the rib sections.
  • K1, P1 Rib – alternating knit and purl stitches across the row, creating a stretchy, structured border at hems and cuffs.
  • Stocking Stitch – the primary fabric stitch, producing a smooth knitted face and a textured purl reverse, worked throughout the main body and sleeves.
  • Slip stitch (s1) – used as part of the decrease sequences, particularly in raglan shaping, to create neat, directional lines.
