This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Sirdar provides instructions for two coordinating designs: a classic raglan cardigan and a matching hat, both worked in Sirdar Snuggly DK yarn. The pattern covers six sizes ranging from birth (0–6 months) through to 6–7 years, making it a versatile choice for knitters looking to create handmade gifts or wardrobe staples for babies and young children.
The cardigan is a timeless, practical design featuring a raglan sleeve construction, which creates a smooth, comfortable fit across the shoulders without a traditional set-in seam. This makes it particularly well-suited to baby and toddler knitwear, where ease of movement and a neat silhouette are both important.
Sleeve lengths range from 15 cm (6 in) for the smallest size up to 33 cm (13 in) for the largest, ensuring a well-proportioned fit at every age.
The cardigan body is worked primarily in moss stitch (also known as seed stitch), a classic textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches across each row, then offsetting them on the following row. Moss stitch produces a firm, non-curling fabric with a subtle, attractive texture that is ideal for children's garments. The pattern also incorporates a garter stitch ridge pattern, which adds visual interest and a slightly different fabric hand to sections of the garment. Garter stitch ridge patterns typically combine rows of plain knitting with occasional purl rows to create a ridged, horizontal texture.
The raglan shaping is a key construction technique used throughout the cardigan. Stitches are cast off and decreased at regular intervals across the raglan lines, shaping the armhole and sleeve head simultaneously. This technique is well-loved in children's knitwear patterns because it reduces the number of seams and produces a comfortable, flexible fit.
The pattern requires the use of stitch holders to keep live stitches secure while other sections are worked — a standard technique when constructing garments with multiple pieces that are later joined.
The cardigan fastens with 5 buttons for the three smallest sizes and 6 buttons for the three larger sizes, plus one smaller button, giving it a neat, traditional finish.
The coordinating hat is designed to fit an average baby's or child's head for each of the six ages covered by the pattern. It is a simple, practical accessory that pairs beautifully with the cardigan and requires only one 50g ball of Sirdar Snuggly DK across all sizes. The hat fastens with one button, adding a charming decorative detail.
Like the cardigan, the hat is worked in the same combination of moss stitch and garter stitch ridge pattern

I have been using sirdar no. 1 for my great grand daughter lily. It is lovely to knit with and my daughter says it washes beautifully. Alas it seems to be getting hard to get which is a shame!
