Product Description
This pattern is for a pair of ornately cabled socks. The cable itself is a Japanese cable that is just perfect for socks. There’s enough “give” to make them comfortable, but enough unusual cabling to make them interesting to look at and fun to knit. The front and back of socks are identical until the heel flap.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of knitting and purling, lace knitting and cabling).
The cable stitch is charted only.
This pattern is written for 2 circular needles and is written for sizes Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, and is sized by gauge
The sock pictured here was made with Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock yarn, in colorway, Curie, however, any light weight fingering yarn will work for this pattern: Needles = 2.25mm for Small, 2.50mm for medium, 2.75mm for L and 3.00mm for XL or preferred to obtain gauge.
Carbondale Cabled Socks by Linda Lehman
What Is Being Made
The Carbondale Cabled Socks are a pair of intricately stitched socks designed by Linda Lehman for intermediate-level knitters. These socks feature a unique cable stitch pattern combined with faggotting details, creating a visually interesting and textured finished garment. The design challenges sock knitters with its combination of stitch techniques while remaining accessible to those with foundational knitting skills.
Skill Level and Techniques
Designed as an intermediate project, the Carbondale Cabled Socks assume basic knowledge of fundamental knitting techniques. Knitters should be comfortable with knitting, purling, and cabling before beginning this pattern. The sock construction incorporates cable stitches as the primary decorative element, adorned with faggotting—a lace-like openwork technique that adds delicate detail to the overall design.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern utilizes several core stitches and techniques:
- Stockinette stitch as the base gauge measurement and foundational stitch
- Cable stitches as the signature design element, created using a cable needle (CN)
- Faggotting for delicate openwork accents paired with the cable pattern
- Kitchener Stitch for seamless grafting at the toe closure
- Standard abbreviations including knit (K), purl (P), stitches (Sts), cast on (CO), bind off (BO), through the back loop (tbl), and cable needle (CN)
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Carbondale Cabled Socks are worked in 4-ply fingering weight yarn, requiring 390 to 475 yards depending on the finished size. This lightweight yarn weight creates a delicate, refined fabric suitable for everyday wear.
Needles are sized according to the desired finished sock size and gauge requirements:
- Size Small: US #2.25mm circular needles (9 stitches per inch gauge)
- Size Medium: US #2.50mm circular needles (7 stitches per inch gauge)
- Size M-L: US #2.75mm or #3.00mm circular needles (7 stitches per inch gauge)
- Size Large-XL: US #2.75mm or #3.00mm circular needles (6.5 stitches per inch gauge)
Additional materials include two circular needles for the primary sock construction, one optional 12-inch needle for adjusting fit, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a cable needle for executing cable crossings, and a tapestry needle for finishing the toe with the Kitchener Stitch grafting technique.
Gauge Considerations
Achieving proper gauge is essential for sock fit. The pattern provides multiple gauge options to accommodate different needle sizes and yarn characteristics. Stockinette stitch gauge serves as the primary measurement standard, with specific stitch counts per inch for each size range. Knitters should swatch and adjust needle size as needed to match the recommended gauge for their chosen sock size.
