What is Being Made

Carapace is a seamless knitted hat designed for wearers from newborn through large adult sizes. The hat features patterning reminiscent of sea shells, inspired by the definition of carapace as a protective, shell-like covering. The seamless construction ensures comfort for the wearer, eliminating irritating seams that can occur in traditionally constructed hats.

Sizes and Specifications

This pattern includes six size options to accommodate various head circumferences:

• Newborn: 38–43 cm (15–17 inches)
• 3 months – 3 years: 40.5–45.5 cm (16–18 inches)
• 3–6 years: 45.5–48 cm (18–19 inches)
• 6–14 years: 48–51 cm (19–20 inches)
• Teen – Adult: 51–56 cm (20–22 inches)
• Large Adult: 58–61 cm (23–24 inches)

Yarn Requirements and Suggestions

Carapace is designed for DK weight yarn, making it an ideal project for intermediate knitters. Yarn quantities range from 100 meters (110 yards) for newborn sizes to 185 meters (200 yards) for large adult sizes. The pattern offers flexibility in colorwork: instructions are provided for single-color knitting, but the shell patterning can also be executed in contrasting yarn. When working with two colors, approximately ⅓ of the total yardage is used for the contrast color and ⅔ for the main color.

Suggested yarn includes Dia Twist DK by Colour Adventures, which is composed of 100% merino fiber. Sample projects in the pattern showcase beautiful colorway combinations such as Pansies paired with Pop Rocks, Chilly, and Sour Cherry with Rainy Day from Colour Adventures and Madelinetosh.
