Product Description
If you buy both my Caramel Latte Shrug and Caramel Latte Hat patterns you will get the two for $7.98.
This is a pretty hat with the main design feature being the band. You will need to be familiar (or willing to learn) front and back post stitches and clusters to create this hat successfully.
I used a self striping yarn for the band which gave it a really interesting look, it also means that if you have a partial ball of beautiful self striping yarn you can use it up and put a plain matching yarn with it for the body of the hat.
There is a matching shrug to go with this hat that will be released in early August.
It is made to fit many sizes:
Toddler: 45.5 – 50.5cm/18 – 20" Child: 48 – 52/19 – 20.5 Teen/Small: 53 – 56cm/20 – 22" Medium: 56 – 58cm/21 – 23.5" Large: 58 – 61cm/22 – 24.5"

Caramel Latte Hat by Sarahjanedesigns
Project Overview
The Caramel Latte Hat is an intermediate-level crochet design created by independent designer Sarahjanedesigns. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a versatile, two-color striped hat suitable for multiple sizes, from toddlers through adults. The design combines warm caramel and beige tones to create an appealing colorway that works well for various seasons and occasions.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a fitted crochet hat with a structured band and crown. The design features a self-striping technique using two distinct yarn colors: a self-striping yarn in caramel for the band section, and a solid beige yarn for the main body. The hat is designed to sit comfortably on the head with a snug band and shaped crown.
Available Sizes
The Caramel Latte Hat pattern includes six size options to accommodate different age groups and head sizes:
- Toddler: 45.5 – 50.5cm (18 – 20 inches)
- Child: 48 – 52cm (19 – 20.5 inches)
- Teen/Small: 53 – 56cm (20 – 22 inches)
- Medium: 56 – 58cm (21 – 23.5 inches)
- Large: 58 – 61cm (22 – 24.5 inches)
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Caramel Latte Hat employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The primary stitch used throughout the pattern is treble (tr), which creates a lightweight, open fabric ideal for hat construction. Additional stitches include chain (ch) for foundation rows and shaping, double crochet (dc) for structural elements, and slip stitch (sl st) for joining rounds and finishing edges.
The pattern utilizes a self-striping technique in the band section, where the yarn's inherent color variations create stripes without requiring color changes by the crocheter. This approach simplifies the construction process while adding visual interest. The two-color construction method involves transitioning from the caramel striped band to the solid beige crown, creating a cohesive design.
Materials Required
Completing the Caramel Latte Hat requires the following materials:
Yarn: The pattern calls for worsted-weight yarn (also known as DK/8ply or light worsted) in two colors. The designer used Sean Sheep Rockbank yarn, which is composed of 70% wool and 30% soy, offering a blend of warmth and sustainability. Emotive Yarns Taradale is noted as an alternative that produces comparable results. Yarn quantities needed are:
- Caramel (Color 1, for band): 75 meters / 85 yards
- Beige (Color 2, for crown): 135 meters / 150 yards
Tools: A 5.5mm/I/9 crochet hook is specified for this pattern. The pattern notes that hook size may be adjusted to achieve correct tension and gauge. A yarn needle is required for weaving in ends and finishing the garment.
Tension and Gauge
Correct tension and gauge are essential for successful completion of the Caramel Latte Hat. The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches and 6 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) when working treble stitch with a 5.5mm/I/9 hook. Measurements should be taken on unblocked and unstretched fabric. The pattern emphasizes that achieving proper gauge is critical for ensuring the hat fits correctly across all size options.
Pattern Format and Terminology
This downloadable PDF pattern is written using UK and Australian crochet terminology. Crafters accustomed to US terminology should note that UK treble (tr) is equivalent to US double crochet, and UK double crochet (dc) is equivalent to US single crochet. The pattern includes standard abbreviations such as st/s (stitch/stitches), ch (chain), sl st (slip stitch), beg (beginning), patt (pattern), rep (repeat), sp (space), and yoh (yarn over hook)
