Product Description
Cape Cod is a slouchy and simple pullover for après beach. Lots of stockinette, a bit of lace, and distinct edgings make a fun and versatile knit. Plucky Sweater is a light merino, so although delicate it offers warmth on a cool day. Cape Cod is also a perfect sweater for a cotton or silk blend if you want a summery vibe without any wool content.
The cuff, hem and neckline ribbing really stands out when bordered in a purl ridge, and the lace panels are detailed without being fussy. The two front panels are actually the separate halves of the back arrowhead motif, worked so the design slants toward center separately on each side. I love how this lace pattern manages to be both textural and geometric at the same time, and it’s a fun one to work.
I love the bright pop of color, comfy fit, and ease of wear with this sweater - perfect for a cool night on the beach or a fall afternoon before or after the season ends.
Sample is in Plucky Sweater. Other yarns are suggested substitutues.
Cape Cod Slouchy Pullover by BabyCocktails
Project Overview
Cape Cod is a slouchy and simple pullover sweater designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails, created as an après beach knit. This intermediate-level knitting project combines extensive stockinette stitch sections with decorative lace panels and distinctive edgings, resulting in a versatile garment suitable for layering on cool days or wearing as a standalone piece during transitional seasons.
Design Features and Construction
The sweater showcases a thoughtfully designed lace pattern that functions as both a textural and geometric element. The lace work is detailed without being overly complicated, making it accessible to intermediate knitters. The front of the garment features two separate lace panels that form the individual halves of an arrowhead motif, with the design slanting toward center on each side. This creates visual interest while maintaining the sweater's relaxed aesthetic.
Ribbing appears at three key locations—the cuffs, hem, and neckline—and is bordered with purl ridges that make these edgings stand out prominently against the stockinette body. This detail work adds definition and structure to an otherwise slouchy silhouette.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the majority of the sweater, providing a smooth, classic knit fabric base
- Lace Panels: Decorative lace sections on the front and back, featuring an arrowhead motif worked in geometric patterns
- Ribbing: 1x1 or similar ribbed construction at cuffs, hem, and neckline for structure and stretch
- Purl Ridge Borders: Purl stitches worked as edging detail around ribbed sections to create visual contrast and definition
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is written for DK weight yarn. The designer recommends light merino as the primary fiber choice, which provides warmth despite its delicate nature, making it suitable for layering on cool evenings. However, Cape Cod is equally well-suited to cotton or silk blend yarns in DK weight if a summery aesthetic without wool content is preferred. The choice of fiber significantly impacts the final garment's drape and seasonal versatility.
Fit and Wearability
The slouchy fit and comfortable construction make Cape Cod an easy-to-wear sweater appropriate for multiple occasions—from cool nights on the beach to fall afternoons before or after the main season. The bright pop of color mentioned in the design adds visual appeal, while the relaxed silhouette allows for layering flexibility and extended wear across temperature ranges.
