Product Description
100% of CAMPFIRE pattern sales during the month of May will be donated to Vinalhaven Community Outreach, a non-profit organization supporting the needs of individuals on the island of Vinalhaven, Maine.
CAMPFIRE is a traditional triangle shawl knit in the most wonderful cashgora fiber (crossbreed of Angora (mohair) and cashmere-producing goats), Cashmere People Yarns. Ethically sourced and environmentally conscious, Cashmere People’s Yarns are handspun and hand-dyed by women in Afghanistan and Tajikistan -- each label carries a photograph and name of the woman who produced your skein. Then the yarn is marketed in the United States by PortFiber.
As much as I wish that I could wear my CAMPFIRE at the retreat this summer, I am so pleased to be able to support my lovely island, Vinalhavne and Casey and the women of Cashmere People Yarns.
Campfire Shawl by VERSACIKNITS
What Is Being Made
Campfire is a triangular knit shawl designed by VERSACIKNITS. This intermediate-level project features a three-color construction that creates visual interest through strategic color placement. The finished shawl measures 56 inches (142 centimeters) across the wingspan with a center depth of 34 inches (86.5 centimeters), making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering or draping.
Construction Method
The Campfire shawl is worked from the top down, beginning with a stockinette stitch tab at the center top and continuing to the bottom edge. The construction method creates a classic triangular silhouette through strategic increases worked on every right-side row. Four yarn-over increases are incorporated into each right-side row—one between the main fabric and the integrated I-cord edge at each end, and one on either side of the center stitch. This increase pattern generates the triangular shape characteristic of the design.
Stitches and Techniques
This project employs several key knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) forms the primary fabric of the shawl
- Yarn-over increases (yo) create the decorative lace elements and shaping
- Integrated I-cord edge finishes the top edge seamlessly as part of the overall construction
- Elastic bind-off completes the bottom edge with flexibility and drape
- Blocking is essential to set the finished measurements and even out the fabric
Yarn and Materials
The Campfire shawl is designed for sport-weight yarn, requiring approximately 945 yards (865 meters) total. The sample shown uses Cashmere People Cashgora, a luxury fiber blend comprising 100% Cashgora fiber. The yarn is divided evenly among three colors—Midnight (A), Marigold (B), and Pamirs (C)—with one skein of each color used. Each skein provides 315 yards (290 meters) per 100-gram weight. Construction requires US size 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in a 32-inch (80-centimeter) length.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch after blocking. While exact gauge is noted as not critical to the overall design, variations in personal gauge will affect both the yardage requirement and the finished measurements of the completed shawl. Blocking is essential to achieve the specified finished dimensions.
