Camassia Skirt by Corrine Walcher

What is Being Made

The Camassia Skirt is a customizable knitted skirt designed by Corrine Walcher that adapts to individual measurements and preferences. This downloadable knitting pattern allows crafters to create a fitted skirt in any size by working from personal body measurements rather than following a single standard size. The sample skirt featured in the pattern measures 30 inches in length and showcases a striking colorwork design using six different colorways of yarn.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern calls for Dragonfly Fibers Dragon Sock yarn, a premium sock-weight yarn. The sample uses 6 skeins totaling approximately 390 yards per 114 grams, though yardage requirements will vary based on your personal measurements and desired finished dimensions. The sample skirt incorporates six distinct colorways: Birch, Titania, Denali, West With The Night, Captain Nemo, and Rocky Top. The pattern employs a gradient colorwork technique, using the least amount of color at the waist and gradually increasing the proportion of each colorway as the skirt extends toward the hem.

Needles required include a US #5/3.75mm circular needle measuring 32 inches or longer, with larger sizes potentially benefiting from an even longer needle. Notions include stitch markers, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and elastic measuring ¾ inch wide.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Camassia Skirt employs stockinette stitch as its primary stitch pattern, worked in the round to create a seamless construction. This classic knitting technique produces a smooth, uniform fabric ideal for a wearable garment. The pattern demonstrates intermediate-level knitting skill, making it suitable for knitters with foundational experience who are ready to tackle fitted garment construction.

The skirt is worked using the in-the-round method on circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous tube of fabric. This technique is particularly well-suited to sock-weight yarn and allows for precise shaping through strategic increases and decreases to achieve a custom fit.

Gauge and Customization

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches in wet-blocked stockinette stitch worked in the round. However, the design philosophy emphasizes flexibility: knitters can work at any gauge to achieve their desired finished dimensions, making the pattern accessible to those using different needle sizes or yarn weights within the sport and 3-ply to 4-ply range. This adaptability means the finished skirt length, circumference, and overall proportions can be tailored entirely to the individual wearer's measurements.

Yarn Weight Compatibility

While the sample uses Dragonfly Fibers Dragon Sock, the pattern accommodates 3-ply, 4-ply, and sport weight yarns, providing flexibility in yarn selection. This range of compatible weights allows knitters to choose from a broader palette of yarn options while maintaining the integrity of the garment's design and drape.
