Product Description

This sweater is worked seamlessly in the round from the top down with short rows to bring up the back neck. Beginning with an I-cord cast on (link to a video tutorial is included). After the neck is shaped by short rows, colorwork is worked from charts while working increases to the yoke. Yoke increases are worked up until the sleeve separation. The sleeve stitches are then placed on hold, underarm stitches are cast on, and you continue to work the body straight, without body shaping, to the bottom ribbing. This is a slightly cropped top. After the body is completed, sleeve stitches are placed back on the needles and worked in the round from the top down to the cuff. Short sleeves make it a quick time on sleeve island. This is a #sizeinclusive pattern.

This sweater is meant to be worn with approx. 4-6 in / 10-15.25 cm of positive ease at the bust.

What is Being Made

The Calla Lilly Pullover is a seamlessly constructed knitted sweater designed as a pullover garment. This intermediate-level project features a sophisticated yoke design with integrated colorwork, making it an ideal choice for knitters looking to expand their skill set beyond basic sweater construction. The pullover is available in multiple sizes, ranging from 1 through 13, offering options for various body measurements and fit preferences.

Construction Techniques

This sweater employs a top-down seamless construction method, which allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and make adjustments to fit before completing the project. The construction begins at the neckline and works downward in the round, eliminating the need for seaming at the end.

Neck Shaping: The pattern utilizes short rows to shape and raise the back neck, creating a custom fit at the neckline that accommodates the natural slope of the shoulders and back.

Yoke and Colorwork: After the neck shaping is complete, colorwork is introduced and worked from charts while simultaneously executing yoke increases. This technique requires knitters to manage both color changes and shaping increases, adding complexity and visual interest to the upper body. The yoke increases continue until the sleeve separation point is reached.

Body and Sleeve Construction: Once the yoke is complete, sleeve stitches are placed on hold while underarm stitches are cast on to create the body. The body is then worked straight downward with no shaping to the ribbed cuff at the hem. After the body is finished, the held sleeve stitches are returned to the needles and worked in the round from the top down to complete each sleeve cuff.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Calla Lilly Pullover incorporates fundamental knitting stitches combined with advanced techniques. The pattern uses increases for yoke shaping, short rows for neck contouring, and ribbing for the cuffs and hem. Colorwork from charts is a key element, requiring knitters to follow a pattern while managing multiple yarn colors within rounds. The seamless in-the-round construction uses circular needles throughout most of the project.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and stitch definition, ideal for displaying colorwork patterns. The pattern requires circular needles appropriate for DK weight yarn to accommodate the seamless top-down construction. Knitters will need needles in the correct size to achieve the specified gauge, which ensures proper fit across all available sizes.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Calla Lilly Pullover is suitable for knitters who have completed basic sweater projects and are comfortable with fundamental techniques. The combination of short rows, colorwork from charts, and seamless construction in the round makes this an excellent project for developing advanced skills while creating a beautiful, wearable garment.
