Product Description
Slightly set in shoulder straps show off your summer shoulders. In winter Caesura morphs into an elegant evening top.
Designed for somewhat obsessive Zigguraters, Caesura is like any true Ziggurat knitted from cast on to cast off in one big sweep with an interesting hem detail. OK, the revised and updated pattern features one snip. One. It just made sense...
The hem is knitted on and attached sideways and makes a little bow around each side rib to create a small flare. Instructions for a simpler hem are included for knitters who don't want to fiddle.
And there is an accordion fold in the back neck just for fun, and also to allow for a higher neckline that isn't too tight.

Caesura PaperSilk Sleeveless Top by Åsa Tricosa
What Is Being Made
Caesura PaperSilk is a sophisticated sleeveless top designed by independent designer Åsa Tricosa. This versatile garment transitions seamlessly from summer wear to elegant evening attire. The design features slightly set-in shoulder straps that showcase the shoulders while maintaining a refined silhouette. A small folded tuck positioned at the back creates a notably high neckline at the front, adding architectural interest to the piece. Available in ten sizes ranging from 81 cm to 127 cm (32 to 50 inches) in circumference, this top accommodates a wide range of body measurements.
Design Inspiration and Construction Method
Caesura PaperSilk draws its conceptual foundation from the Ziggurat architectural form—a stepped pyramid structure. True to this inspiration, the garment is knitted in one continuous piece from cast on to cast off in a distinctive zig-zaggy sweep. However, Åsa Tricosa introduces a deliberate departure from obsessive continuity: a caesura, or pause, represented by a single cut of the yarn. This thoughtful interruption makes the construction process more manageable while maintaining the essential character of the Ziggurat design philosophy.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project employs lace-weight yarn, which creates an airy, delicate fabric ideal for the sleeveless silhouette. The one-piece construction technique requires careful attention to shaping and stitch manipulation as the garment develops from a single cast-on edge. The zig-zagging pattern inherent to the Ziggurat design creates visual movement and texture throughout the piece. Knitters will need to manage the single intentional yarn cut and subsequent rejoining, adding a unique technical element to the project.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern specifies Dye for Yarn PaperSilk Summer Edition in the colorway Fading Polstergeist. This yarn is composed of 100% silk, offering a luxurious drape and subtle sheen characteristic of silk fiber. Each 50-gram skein provides 300 meters or 328 yards of yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size: smaller sizes (81–91 cm) require approximately 540–620 meters (590–680 yards), while larger sizes (102–127 cm) need 750–940 meters (820–1,030 yards).
The pattern includes alternative yarn suggestions for substitution: Dibadu Crujico de Seda and Nature's Luxury Geisha. Both alternatives should provide comparable yardage and weight characteristics to the primary yarn choice. When selecting alternatives, knitters should verify that the substitute yarn matches the lace weight and silk content to achieve the intended drape and finished appearance.
Needle Requirements
While specific needle size and material are not detailed in the provided pattern information, knitters working with lace-weight silk yarn typically require needles in the US 0–2 range (1.5–2.75 mm). The choice between metal, bamboo, or wood needles depends on personal preference; metal needles offer speed and smooth stitching, while bamboo or wood provides enhanced grip for delicate lace work.
Skill Level and Project Scope
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, Caesura PaperSilk suits knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex shaping and one-piece construction techniques. The lace-weight yarn and continuous knitting method demand attention to detail and stitch accuracy. The deliberate yarn cut and rejoining add an unconventional technical element that distinguishes this project from standard garment construction, making it an engaging choice for experienced intermediate knitters seeking creative challenge.
