Product Description

Valley Yarns Caelum is a perfect A-line dress for little girls of all sizes knit in Haydenville’s easy-care properties. This piece has a lovely lace pattern on the bodice and hem and is excellent for layering over a long sleeve tee and leggings during the cooler days. Caelum is knit in the round from the bottom up to the armholes. The cap sleeves are knit in a combination of increased shaping at the armholes. Valley Yarns Haydenville is an extraordinarily soft blend of superwash Merino and acrylic microfiber with a slight sheen. The Flowerbud lace pattern is charted and written out.

Caelum Kids' Dress Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns

The Caelum is a charming A-line dress knitting pattern for children, designed by Julie Turjoman and published by Valley Yarns as pattern #1206. Worked in the beloved Valley Yarns Haydenville yarn, this design combines practical wearability with delicate, decorative detail — making it an ideal project for knitters who want to create a truly special garment for a young child. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, so knitters can get started right away.

What Is Being Made

Caelum is a festive A-line dress designed for little girls across a wide range of sizes. It features knitted-in cap sleeves and a flattering silhouette that flows from a fitted bodice into a gently flared skirt. The design is notably versatile: it can be worn as a standalone dress or as a tunic layered over leggings, extending its wearability across seasons and occasions. The dress is shown in a cheerful Color 25 Pink, though knitters may choose any available colorway of Haydenville to suit their preferences.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

The pattern is written in five sizes to accommodate a broad range of children:

  • 2–4 yr, 4–6 yr, 6–8 yr, 8–10 yr, and 10–12 yr
  • Chest circumference: 24¼ (26½, 28, 30½, 32) inches, designed with 2–4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit
  • Hem circumference: 27¼ (28¾, 30½, 33½, 35¼) inches
  • The photographed sample is shown in Size 6–8 yr

Techniques Used

This pattern is classified as Adventurous Beginner in the original pattern, though it is listed at an intermediate skill level — making it a wonderful stepping stone for knitters ready to expand their skills. Key construction and decorative techniques include:

  • Bottom-up construction: The dress is knitted from the hem upward, allowing knitters to easily adjust length before committing to the bodice shaping.
  • Worked in the round: The garment is constructed circularly using circular needles and double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, seamless fabric.
  • Lace knitting: Beautiful lace accents appear on both the bodice and the skirt hem, adding an elegant, festive touch. Lace knitting typically involves a combination of yarn-overs and decreases worked in a repeating pattern to create decorative openwork motifs.

Stitches Used

While the full stitch list is detailed within the downloadable PDF, the construction of Caelum draws on techniques common to this style of garment:

  • Lace stitches featuring yarn-overs and paired decreases for the decorative bodice and hem panels
  • Knit and purl stitches for the main body fabric
  • Shaping stitches for the A-line silhouette and cap sleeve construction

Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions

The pattern is specifically designed for Valley Yarns Haydenville, a worsted weight yarn with a fiber composition of 60% Superwash Merino / 40% Acrylic Microfiber, sold in 100g / 220-yard skeins. This blend is an excellent choice for a children's garment: the Superwash Merino delivers a soft, next-to-skin feel, while the acrylic microfiber content adds durability and easy-care machine washability — essential for active kids. Yarn requirements by size are:

  • 2 skeins
