Cactus Wizard Harry Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

This is a Cactus Wizard Harry amigurumi toy designed by Svitlana Yakobets. The pattern creates a whimsical crocheted succulent plant character that combines the appearance of a wizard with a cactus form. The finished toy is intended to be displayed in a small plant pot, making it a decorative piece that merges craft with plant-themed décor. This is an independent designer project created in 2020.

Craft and Technique Overview

This pattern uses crochet as the primary construction method. The design employs the spiral crochet technique, meaning rounds are worked continuously without joining, which creates a seamless appearance and maintains consistent tension throughout the piece. This approach is common in amigurumi construction and helps achieve smooth, professional-looking results.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches suitable for amigurumi work:

  • Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch used for building the main structure
  • Increases (inc) – used to expand the piece during the early rounds to create the cactus stem's cylindrical shape
  • Decreases (dec) – used in later rounds to gradually reduce stitches and shape the upper portion of the form
  • Magic circle – the starting technique for beginning the piece with a closed center

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for specific materials to complete the project:

  • Hook size: 1.75 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn: YarnArt "Jeans" brand yarn (55% cotton, 45% polyacrylic blend, 160 meters per 50 grams) in multiple colors: orange (No. 35), red (No. 26), black (No. 53), green (No. 69), grafit (No. 28), and bordo (No. 66)
  • Lace weight yarn: The pattern specifies lace weight yarn, which creates delicate, finely detailed stitching
  • Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill or similar material to fill the amigurumi
  • Wire: Black wire for constructing the spectacles accessory
  • Additional tools: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker for tracking rounds, scissors, and a small plant pot approximately 8 cm (3.15 inches)

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses basic crochet stitches, the combination of spiral working, multiple color changes, wire shaping for spectacles, and proper amigurumi finishing techniques requires prior crochet experience and comfort with fundamental skills.

Pattern Structure

The cactus stem is constructed using increasing and decreasing rounds to create a three-dimensional cylindrical form. The pattern begins with 6 single crochets in a magic circle and expands through rounds of increases paired with single crochets, reaching a maximum of 54 stitches by round 10. Subsequent rounds maintain or decrease the stitch count to shape the piece, with rounds 10 through 17 worked at a consistent 54 stitches, followed by gradual decreases in rounds 18 and 22 to taper the upper section.

Design Features

The multicolor yarn palette allows for creating distinct sections of the wizard character, including the cactus body in green and various colored elements for the wizard costume and accessories. The inclusion of wire and black yarn for spectacles adds dimensional detail and character expression to the finished toy.
