Product Description
This is a 9 page downloadable pdf pattern for either fingerless or full size mittens, knitted in the round on a set of double pointed needles (shown, yet can be adapted for a short circular or magic loop circular needles if that is your preferred method for knitting in the round). This pattern includes written instructions, charts, photographs of various stages of the projects. It is written for one size, which is S-M, approx. 18,5-21cm hand circumference. Pattern calls for DK yarn and size 3 mm needles. Please remember, the gauge for knitting in the round will be different to the gauge for knitting flat.
I used a set of 3mm dpns and DK yarn by King Cole (pink pair and deep aqua fingerless pair), I also used Sirdar DK for off white pairs. Beads are optional. Both yarns knitted and washed perfectly.
Pattern is published with the help from my testers - Christine, Marsha, Elise and Rhonda.
This pattern is for personal use only.
Cables and Beads Mittens by Irina Smith
Project Overview
Cables and Beads Mittens is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Irina Smith for creating a pair of fingerless mittens with decorative mock cables and beaded embellishments. The pattern is written at an intermediate difficulty level and includes instructions for adapting the design into full-size mittens as an alternative option.
What You'll Create
This pattern produces fingerless mittens—a versatile accessory that keeps hands warm while leaving fingers free for dexterity and movement. The mittens feature mock cable texturing combined with strategically placed beads for visual interest and a polished, handcrafted appearance.
Knitting Techniques and Methods
The mittens are knitted in the round, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. This pattern accommodates multiple methods for circular knitting, giving crafters flexibility based on their tool preferences and experience:
- Double pointed needles (dpns)—a traditional five-needle set approach
- Short circular needles—ideal for smaller circumferences
- Long cable circular needles using the magic loop method—a technique that uses a single long needle to work small circumferences by creating loops
The pattern teaches bead placement using a small crochet hook, a practical method for securing beads onto knitted fabric. This technique allows beads to be integrated into the finished mittens with precision. The pattern acknowledges that alternative bead-setting methods exist, such as using thin wire, giving experienced knitters the option to adapt the process to their preferred approach.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The mittens feature mock cables—a textured stitch pattern that creates the visual appearance of traditional cables without the complexity of actual cable crossing. Mock cables are achieved through strategic yarn-over and decrease combinations, making them more accessible than true cables while delivering similar aesthetic impact. This technique is well-suited to the intermediate skill level of the pattern.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight classification ideal for mittens. Approximately 100 grams (208 meters / 228 yards) of yarn is required to complete the project. The designer has tested the pattern with multiple yarn fiber compositions, including:
- 100% merino wool
- Wool and alpaca blends
- Merino and acrylic blends
This variety of tested fibers demonstrates the pattern's versatility and suggests that different yarn choices can produce mittens with varying warmth, softness, and durability characteristics.
Needles: Size 3mm needles are required, in your preferred style for knitting in the round. The pattern explicitly mentions using a set of 5 double pointed needles as one example, though as noted above, circular needles and the magic loop method are also suitable alternatives.
Additional Notions: A small crochet hook is needed for bead placement, and beads themselves (quantity and size not specified in the provided pattern excerpt) are required for the decorative elements.
Difficulty and Skill Requirements
Rated at intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills including the ability to knit in the round using at least one of the three methods described. Familiarity with basic increase and decrease techniques is necessary to work the mock cable stitches, and comfort with bead placement using a crochet hook is beneficial, though the pattern provides instruction for this technique.
