Product Description

2020’s Divine Debris CAL features another fun coffee theme but this time it’s in a corner to corner style! Yep, that’s right, this year is going to showcase the fun and speed of C2C.

July’s Divine Debris C2C Coffee CAL square is in honor of that sweet respite from summer heat - the ice coffee. Have it with cream or drink it black, an iced coffee seems to hit the spot when it’s so hot your sunglasses feel like they’re melting while on your face. This square, however, isn’t nearly as refreshing but it will look great when you snuggle under it once the heat has passed.

What Is Being Made

The C2C Iced Coffee Afghan Square is a corner-to-corner crochet blanket square designed as an intermediate-level project. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished square suitable for use as a throw blanket, decorative afghan piece, or component in a larger blanket project. The design features an iced coffee theme worked in multiple colors to create a cohesive visual pattern.

Crochet Technique: Corner-to-Corner (C2C)

This pattern utilizes the corner-to-corner crochet technique, commonly abbreviated as C2C. The C2C method is a popular approach for creating graphical designs and colorwork in crochet by working from one corner diagonally toward the opposite corner. In this specific pattern, you will work from the bottom right corner to the top left corner, building the design systematically as you progress.

The C2C technique is particularly well-suited for creating pixel-art style designs and requires the crocheter to change colors strategically throughout the project. Each C2C square unit consists of 3 double crochets and a chain-3, which forms the basic building block repeated throughout the pattern. The pattern instructions specify which color to use and how many squares to work in each section, simplifying the color-work process.

This pattern involves two distinct phases: increasing rows (rows 1-36) where the square expands outward, and decreasing rows (rows 37-71) where the square is shaped to completion. Because this is a square rather than a rectangular project, you will not need to manage the typical increase-on-one-side-and-decrease-on-the-other complexity found in some C2C afghans.

Stitches Used

  • Double Crochet (DC) – the primary stitch used in the C2C squares
  • Chain Stitch (ch) – used to create the chain-3 spacing between double crochets in each square unit
  • Color Changes – essential technique for transitioning between the four yarn colors to build the iced coffee design

Materials and Specifications

Crochet Hook: US G (4.00 mm) hook

Yarn: Size #4 / worsted weight / medium weight yarn in 4 colors. The total yardage required is approximately 582 yards across all colors, with a total weight of approximately 11 ounces. Specific yardage and color breakdowns are detailed in the pattern notes section.

Additional Notions: Scissors, measuring tape, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing.

Gauge: 7 squares by 7 rows measure 4.5 inches when blocked, providing a standard reference for checking your tension before beginning the full project.

Skill Level and Prerequisites

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex colorwork. To successfully complete this project, you should be comfortable with:

  • Basic crochet stitches, particularly double crochet
  • Reading crochet patterns and following row-by-row instructions
  • Changing yarn colors within a crochet project
  • The corner-to-corner crochet technique (the pattern notes recommend consulting a tutorial by Meghan Makes Do if you are unfamiliar with C2C construction)

Pattern Notes and Finishing

The pattern is provided in downloadable PDF format from Divine Debris. The design is worked as a perfect square, eliminating the asymmetrical shaping challenges of rectangular afghans. The color-by-number system simplifies following the graphical design—rather than interpreting a chart, you simply follow instructions indicating which color (Color A, Color B, etc.) to use and how many squares to work in each section.

Blocking the finished square to the specified gauge will help achieve clean, even edges and ensure the final dimensions are accurate. This C2C Iced Coffee Afghan Square can be displayed as a standalone decorative throw or combined with additional squares to create a larger blanket project.
