Butterfly Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet

What Is Being Made

This is a crochet butterfly pattern designed by independent designer Kerri's Crochet. The finished project creates a decorative butterfly suitable for embellishment, display, or integration into larger crochet projects. The pattern includes instructions for constructing the butterfly's body and wings using fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern employs a variety of crochet stitches to create dimensional wings and a structured body. The butterfly is constructed in separate components—the body and wings—which are then joined together. The designer uses color variation across 7 different colors of yarn to create visual interest and definition in the finished butterfly. Assembly involves sewing the upper body section onto the main body using a sewing needle and black cotton thread.

Stitches Used

The Butterfly pattern incorporates the following crochet stitches:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used to create the foundation for the body and wings
  • Double crochet (dc) – used in the body construction and wing details
  • Half treble crochet (htr) – used in wing sections for medium height
  • Treble crochet (tr) – used in wing construction
  • Double treble crochet (dtr) – used to create taller stitches in the wing pattern
  • Triple treble crochet (ttr) – used to create the tallest stitch elements in the wing design
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining sections

Materials Required

The pattern calls for 4 ply crochet cotton or wool yarn in 7 different colors to create the multicolored butterfly design. A 1.25mm crochet hook is recommended based on the designer's specifications. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, and a sewing needle with black cotton thread for assembling the upper body to the main body section.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses fundamental stitches, the combination of multiple stitch types, color changes, and assembly techniques requires some crochet experience to execute successfully.

Format

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF that includes complete written instructions and component guides for creating the butterfly.
