Bunny Basket Crochet Pattern Overview
The Bunny Basket, also known as a Rabbit Handbag or Easter Egg Hunt bag, is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed by Angelika Liusinska. This charming decorative basket combines functional storage with whimsical bunny styling, making it an ideal first crochet bag project for crafters new to amigurumi and structured bag construction.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a small decorative basket with bunny features, measuring approximately 14.5cm x 13.5cm (not including the handle and ears). The basket includes tall bunny ears extending about 9cm in height, giving it a distinctive rabbit character perfect for Easter egg hunts or as a novelty storage container. The design incorporates a functional handle for carrying, making it both decorative and practical for holding small items or treats.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
This beginner-level project employs fundamental crochet stitches and techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The pattern utilizes the following stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch for creating the base structure
- Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch for building the basket walls and body
- Treble crochet (tr) – used for creating taller, more open sections
- Slip stitch (ss) – employed to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Double crochet decrease (2-st dc dec) – used for shaping and reducing stitches
- Crab stitch or reverse double crochet (rdc) – a special finishing technique that creates a textured edge
The pattern is worked in rounds, building the basket structure from the base upward. The instructions use UK crochet terminology and include standard notation conventions: square brackets indicate stitch groups worked in a single location, and asterisks mark sections to be repeated throughout the pattern.
Materials and Tools Required
The Bunny Basket pattern calls for specific yarn weights and quantities to achieve the proper finished size and texture:
- Hayfield Bonus Chunky yarn (137 meters per 100g ball) in grey pink or any preferred color – used as the primary yarn for the basket body
- Sirdar Snuggly Snowflake DK weight yarn (85 meters per 25g ball) – a lighter weight option for details or contrast elements
- Stylecraft Special DK yarn (295 meters per 100g ball) – an alternative DK weight option for fine details
- Crochet hooks in sizes 3.0mm and 5.0mm – the larger hook works with chunky yarn for the main structure, while the smaller hook provides control for finer details
- Tapestry needle and curved needle – for weaving in yarn ends and assembling components
- Craft wire (2mm diameter) – provides structure and shape retention for the ears and handle
- Felt fabric – a small piece used to secure and protect the wire ends
- Polyester filling – a small amount for stuffing the nose to create dimension
The chunky yarn weight combined with appropriate hook sizes creates a quick-working project that produces a sturdy, well-defined basket structure. The combination of different yarn weights allows for both bold main elements and delicate finishing details.
Pattern Structure and Design Elements
This crochet design incorporates both functional and decorative elements. The basket body provides storage capacity while the bunny features—including the ears and facial details—give it personality. The inclusion of craft wire in the construction ensures the ears maintain their shape and the basket holds its form, making it suitable for actual use rather than purely decorative display. The nose stuffing adds a three-dimensional quality to the bunny face, enhancing its appeal as a novelty Easter or spring-themed accessory.
