Product Description
This is my first ever sock pattern. As such, I felt like I was bumbling around trying to figure out how to put words to my actions. I’ve been in a bee mood of late and wanted socks with bees fluttering about. So “Bumbling Bees” seemed like a fitting name for my socks. I have incorporated stripes and a simple lace section on the leg. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
Note: These socks are made for an average adult female foot with a 9” circumference, using a 72 stitch count. The pattern is only available in one size because the Bees section is a 36 stitch repeat. Size can only be adjusted by changing your needle size and/or weight of yarn. The pattern is written for using a set of 5 DPNs. You may use your preferred method of knitting in the round, but this pattern won’t reflect the changes necessary to do so.
Gauge: 32sts/4”
Needles: 2.25 mm, or size necessary to obtain gauge.
Optional: A needle one size larger for bind off
Yarn: 2 colors of fingering weight yarn, 230 yards each
Bumbling Bees Socks by April Davis
Project Overview
Bumbling Bees is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by independent designer April Davis. This downloadable PDF pattern represents the designer's first sock design, combining playful striping with delicate lace detailing inspired by a bee theme. The socks are crafted to fit an average adult female foot and showcase creative colorwork with a distinctive bee motif worked into the leg section.
What Is Being Made
These are knitted socks designed for an average adult female foot with a 9-inch circumference. The pattern features a striped leg with a lace section incorporating a bee design element. The socks are constructed using the traditional top-down method and are sized for a single fit using a 72-stitch cast-on.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Knitting in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles
- Stranded colorwork or striping with two colors of yarn
- Lace knitting techniques for the decorative bee section on the leg
- Standard sock construction methods including cuff, leg, heel, foot, and toe shaping
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern incorporates a 36-stitch repeat for the bee lace section, which determines the overall sizing constraints. Lace stitches are combined with stockinette stitch sections and striped colorwork to create visual interest on the leg of the sock.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: 2 colors of fingering weight yarn (4-ply), requiring 230 yards of each color
- Needles: 2.25 mm needles (or size necessary to obtain gauge); optional larger needle for bind-off
- Gauge: 32 stitches over 4 inches
- Additional Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends; set of 5 double-pointed needles (DPNs) as written, though other in-the-round methods are accommodated
Sizing and Customization
The pattern is available in one size only, designed for a 9-inch foot circumference using 72 stitches. Because the bee lace section is a fixed 36-stitch repeat, size adjustments cannot be made through typical pattern scaling. Instead, crafters may customize the fit by changing needle size and/or selecting a different yarn weight, which will proportionally adjust the finished dimensions while maintaining the stitch pattern integrity.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the designer notes the learning curve of translating sock construction into written instructions, the pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and basic lace techniques. The combination of colorwork, lace shaping, and sock-specific construction methods positions this project between beginner and advanced skill levels.
