Product Description

With this very easy pattern, you can make a funny and realistic looking crochet otter.

Size: 6 inch/ 15 cm when made with Istex Lett Lopi and hook E / 3,5 mm.

The instructions are written in US crochet terms. The pattern contains a list of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right.

Materials For this crochet otter you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need three colours of yarn, brown (2/3 of a 100 yard skein), beige (1/10) and a left over bit of very dark brown or black for the nose. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). A pipe cleaner for the tail is optional. Lopi colour numbers: 0053, 0086 and 0052.

Bubbly the Otter Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

Bubbly is an amigurumi-style crocheted otter toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk of Son's Popkes. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished otter approximately 6.2 inches (15.5 cm) tall when made with the recommended yarn and tension. The project is classified as beginner-level, making it accessible to crocheters new to toy construction.

Crochet Techniques Used

The otter is constructed using fundamental amigurumi techniques that build three-dimensional forms. The doll is worked in the round using continuous spirals rather than joined rounds, creating seamless cylindrical and spherical sections. Crocheters are encouraged to use a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, moving it upward as new rounds commence. The pattern incorporates color changes throughout the construction, with some color transitions marked in color-coded text for clarity and others noted within round descriptions. Color changes are executed in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as work progresses.

Crochet Stitches and Construction Methods

While specific stitch abbreviations are written in standard American crochet terminology, the pattern employs basic amigurumi stitches suitable for beginners. The spiral construction method allows for continuous work without breaking yarn between rounds, streamlining the building process. The pattern includes guidance on adjusting eye size based on personal preference and individual crochet tension, acknowledging that finished dimensions vary depending on yarn weight and how tightly the crocheter works.

Materials: Yarn and Tools

The pattern calls for worsted-weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends fuzzy yarn for optimal results, having used Istex Lètt lopi, which is 100% wool, for the original sample. A crochet hook appropriate for worsted-weight yarn is required, along with a stitch marker for tracking rounds during spiral construction.

Pattern Format

Bubbly is provided as a downloadable PDF document, allowing crocheters to access instructions digitally and print if desired for reference during crafting.
