Brunswick Triangular Lace Shawl by Mindy Wilkes
Project Overview
Brunswick is an advanced-level triangular shawl designed by independent designer Mindy Wilkes. This knitted shawl is constructed using a top-down method and features an intricate allover lace pattern with decorative picot hems integrated throughout the design. As a sister shawl to the Holden shawl, Brunswick represents a sophisticated approach to shawlette construction suitable for experienced knitters.
Construction Method and Design
The shawl is worked from the top down, a construction technique that allows knitters to try on the garment as it grows and adjust the final size by simply binding off when the desired dimensions are reached. The triangular silhouette creates a versatile wrap that drapes elegantly across the shoulders. The allover lace pattern is the primary design feature, with picot hems strategically placed throughout the lace sections to add textural interest and definition to the shawl's surface.
Finished Dimensions
The completed Brunswick shawl measures 53.5 x 24.5 inches (136 x 62 centimeters), providing a generous triangular wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn Weight and Yardage: 700 yards (640 meters) of lace weight yarn
- Sample Yarn: Anzula Mermaid in the colorway Persimmon, composed of 60% sea cell and 40% silk, with 700 yards (640 meters) per 115 grams
- Needles: US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches or longer, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge
- Additional Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends and waste yarn for provisional cast-on or stitch holders
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 23 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the lace pattern after blocking. While gauge is noted as not crucial for fit since the shawl's drape is not dependent on precise measurements, variations in gauge will affect the final size of the completed shawl and may alter the total yardage required to complete the project. Knitters should be prepared to adjust their needle size if their gauge differs significantly from the specified measurement.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Brunswick employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for advanced knitters working with lace patterns. The construction incorporates the following core stitches and techniques:
- Knit (k): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (p): Purl stitches are used to create textural variation and definition within the lace pattern
- Yarn Over (yo): This stitch creates the characteristic eyelets and openwork that define lace knitting, essential to the allover lace pattern
- Knit Two Together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the shawl and create lace motifs
- Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease that pairs with k2tog to create balanced decreases within the lace design
- Picot Hems: Decorative edging created through strategic yarn overs and decreases, interspersed throughout the lace sections
- Markers: Place markers (pm) are used to denote pattern repeats and construction sections
Blocking and Finishing
The gauge measurement specified in the pattern is taken after blocking, indicating that blocking is an essential finishing step for this lace shawl. Blocking will open up the lace pattern, set the stitches, and help achieve the finished dimensions listed in the pattern.
Skill Level
This project is classified as advanced difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with substantial experience in lace knitting, shawl construction, and reading complex stitch patterns. Familiarity with top-down shawl construction and comfort working with yarn overs and decreases is essential for successfully completing this design.
