Product Description
Need a quick project? This is it. Super bulky yarn and a simple reversible cable pattern will get you cozy warm in no time at all.
When designing the cowl, I used a superwash wool-blend yarn (WOOLADDICTS Fire by Lang). Superwash wool and wool-blend yarns often grow when blocked, so the gauge that I have indicated (12 sts/4”) was measured after blocking. This is important! If you are using a non-superwash wool or wool-blend, you will likely need larger needles than the US 11/8mm indicated in the pattern (all of this is written in notes in the pattern).
I have included links to the 3 Kittens Needle Arts YouTube channel within the pattern for video tutorials for: tubular cast on for 1x1 ribbing, tubular bind off for 1x1 ribbing, and tips on weaving in ends invisibly.
Brule Cowl by 3 Kittens Needle Arts
What is Being Made
The Brule Cowl is a knitted cowl designed by Laura Rasmussen, measuring approximately 40-42 inches in circumference and 7 inches wide. This is a versatile neckwear accessory that can be worn as a close-fitting neck wrap or styled in multiple ways for different looks and occasions.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft with a specialized focus on reversible cable techniques. The reversible cable method is accomplished through a ribbed pattern foundation, specifically a 1x1 rib structure. This technique creates cables that look attractive from both sides of the fabric, making the cowl equally beautiful whether worn with the cable pattern facing outward or inward. This reversible quality adds functional versatility to the finished garment.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The Brule Cowl employs the following stitches and abbreviations:
- CF4 (4-stitch Front Cable): Slip two stitches onto a cable needle and hold to the front of the work; knit one and purl one from the left-hand needle, then knit one and purl one from the stitches on the cable needle. This creates the distinctive cable texture.
- k (knit stitch): The fundamental knit stitch used throughout the pattern
- p (purl stitch): The purl stitch used in combination with knit stitches to create the 1x1 ribbed foundation
- 1x1 rib: An alternating pattern of one knit stitch and one purl stitch that forms the base structure supporting the reversible cables
Materials and Gauge Information
The Brule Cowl is worked in super bulky weight yarn, requiring approximately 150 yards total. The pattern calls for US 11/8mm circular needles measuring 32 inches, or needles sized to obtain the specified gauge. Additional materials include a cable needle for manipulating stitches during cable crossings, stitch markers to track pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
The recommended gauge is 12 stitches and 15 rows per 4 inches when worked in the cable pattern and blocked. An important note from the designer: the gauge measurement provided reflects the fabric after wet blocking. The designer originally created this cowl using superwash wool blend yarn, which tends to grow when wet blocked. If using non-superwash wool or wool blends that do not have the same blocking properties, knitters may need to use larger needles, such as US 15/10mm, to achieve the target gauge. Checking gauge before beginning is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The reversible cable technique and cable abbreviations require familiarity with cable knitting fundamentals, though the pattern provides clear instructions for executing the stitches.
