Product Description
I designed Breeze because most amigurumi butterfly can't stand up on their own two wings! Breeze is an adorable butterfly who is sturdy enough to take her place on a play mat or shelf but is soft enough for cuddles too!
This wee cutie measures 5” tall (including her antenna) but you can make her bigger or smaller just by changing the yarn weight and/or hook size.

Most of this pattern is straightforward: single crochet, increases and decreases. The antenna and wings are a little fiddly, but there are progress photos which should ensure you don’t get lost!
Breeze the Butterfly Amigurumi by Deanne Shoyer
What is Being Made
Breeze the Butterfly is a crocheted amigurumi toy designed by Deanne Shoyer of Small But Kinda Mighty. This is a stuffed fabric butterfly craft project created using the amigurumi technique, which involves crocheting small, three-dimensional figures that are then filled with polyester stuffing. The finished toy features a distinct head and body in a main color yarn, with contrasting wings created in a secondary yarn color. The butterfly is finished with 12 mm safety eyes for a completed, child-safe appearance.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs several fundamental amigurumi construction techniques. The project begins with a magic ring (also called magic loop or magic circle), which creates a tight, adjustable starting point for circular crochet work. The pattern uses increases and decreases to shape the three-dimensional form, allowing the crocheter to expand and contract the fabric as needed to create the butterfly's body structure. Back loop only (BLO) and front loop only (FLO) stitching techniques are incorporated to add texture and definition to specific sections of the design.
Stitches Used
The primary stitches featured in Breeze the Butterfly include:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundational and structural elements
- Single crochet (sc) – the main stitch for building the amigurumi body and wings
- Increase (inc) – worked as 2 single crochet stitches in the same stitch to expand the fabric
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – used to decrease stitches and shape the form
- Slip stitch (sl st) – employed to join rounds and secure stitches
Materials and Tools
This crochet toy pattern requires DK weight yarn in two colors – a main color for the head and body, and a contrasting color for the wings. The designer recommends Cascade Sunseeker yarn for the wings. Additional materials include a 3.5 mm (size E) crochet hook, 12 mm safety eyes for facial features, polyester filling for stuffing the amigurumi, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling the finished pieces. The combination of DK weight yarn and a size E hook creates appropriately sized stitches for a small, detailed toy project.
