This Pattern Uses US & [UK Terms]
The pattern is written for a Adult Small; measurements are included for Adult Medium & Large.
I am quite proud of how this beanie design has turned out. This pattern creates a braided design on one side and a ribbed pattern on the creating two hats in one. Below you will find a picture tutorial to show you how to attach a pom pom (optional) so that you can remove and re-attach it depending on the side on which you wear the hat.
Also, I love when I can make an item all in one piece, and I accomplished that with this pattern, so there is not much weaving to do at the end, unless you decide to use more than one colour for your beanie. And that is the beauty of this pattern, you can be as creative as you like with your colourway as well as the size yarn you use. Just use the measurements provided to determine the size you want to make.
Braided & Ribbed 2-in-1 Beanie Hat with Optional Pom Pom
What Is Being Made
This crochet pattern by Gloria Miller creates a reversible beanie hat that functions as two distinct designs in one garment. One side features a braided pattern while the opposite side displays a ribbed texture, allowing the wearer to flip the hat and choose which design to display. The pattern includes optional instructions for attaching a removable pom pom, which can be switched between sides depending on how the hat is worn.
Design Features & Construction
The beanie is constructed as a single continuous piece, minimizing finishing work and seaming. This seamless construction method reduces the amount of weaving required at the end of the project, making assembly straightforward. The reversible nature of the design means you get two distinct hat styles from one pattern, providing versatility and value.
Crochet Techniques & Stitches Used
This pattern employs intermediate to advanced beginner level crochet techniques to achieve its dual-textured design. The braided side utilizes stitching methods that create a woven appearance, while the ribbed side incorporates ribbed stitch patterns that produce vertical texture and stretch. Both textures are worked in the same piece, creating the reversible effect.
Yarn & Materials
The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, including Aran, Chunky, DK, and Super Chunky options, allowing crafters to choose based on desired finished size and drape. The designer used approximately 185 yards (170 meters) of Hayfield Bonus Aran with Wool in the Maize colourway for the sample. The pattern provides measurement guidelines to help determine which yarn weight and quantity to use for your preferred hat size.
